Wanderers began the new campaign with a bang, sweeping York City aside with a 3-0 victory at Adams Park.Anthony Stewart, Aaron Amadi-Holloway and a Stephane Zubar own goal did the damage for the visitors who were unable to cope with a dominant attacking display from the Chairboys.
The game was just six minutes old when Stewart pounced to open the scoring on his second debut for the club, reacting quickest when the visitors failed to deal with a long free-kick to steer past Scott Flinders.
Reece Thompson came close to levelling when his snapshot flashed just the wrong side of the post but it was Wanderers who looked the bigger attacking threat, causing countless headaches with a three-pronged frontline plus the support of the attack-minded Sam Wood and Luke O’Nien.
Amadi-Holloway tested the keeper’s handling with a shot from outside the area but the York debutant stopper had no chance moments later when the striker crashed an effort past him from just inside the area. Aaron Pierre and Garry Thompson used their strength brilliantly to tee up Amadi-Holloway and he fired home for his third goal in his last five competitive appearances.
O’Nien fired over from a Thompson cross before the break as the hosts continued to look the more likely to score next, and when the third goal did come 10 minutes into the second period, it was a moment destined for a Christmas blooper DVD. Amadi-Holloway put centre-back Stephane Zubar under pressure 25 yards from goal and the City man inexplicably lobbed it into the net over Flinders’ head.
York responded by bringing Jake Hyde off the bench and he came close to reducing the deficit only to be denied by two epic challenges from Aaron Pierre.
Marcus Bean’s first-time shot fell wide as the chances began to dry up at both ends with the three points safely in the bag, matching Wanderers’ best ever opening day scoreline which came against Cambridge 21 years ago.
