Alfie Mawson shortlisted for League 2 Player of the Year prize

15 April 2015

Wanderers defender Alfie Mawson is in contention for the Sky Bet League 2 Player of the Year award after a phenomenal first season in league football.

The Brentford loanee has excelled alongside his former Bees team-mate Aaron Pierre in the heart of defence, contributing to 14 clean sheets and scoring five times in a memorable debut season.

He faces competition from Danny Mayor of Bury and Ryan Woods of Shrewsbury for the coveted award, which will be presented at the Football League Awards in London on Sunday evening.

The Sky Bet Player of the Year awards have been voted for by managers of the clubs in each division. Each manager was asked to list their top five players from this season in order, with the scores added up to get a shortlist and an overall winner.

A statement from the league described Mawson's contribution as follows:

"The central defender has been a rock upon which the Chairboys have built their Sky Bet League 2 promotion challenge this season, helping them keep 14 clean sheets so far.  Alfie has contributed at the other end of the pitch too, finding the net 5 times.  Having joined on a short-term loan from Brentford as injury cover just 24 hours before the start of the season, he quickly made a name for himself with a string of fine displays, leading to his deal being extended."
