Gareth Ainsworth has now won all seven of his matches in charge of the Blues in the south-west county, scoring 13 goals in the process and conceding just one.
Their latest success came courtesy of Paul Hayes’ first-half header, guiding the ball home following Joe Jacobson’s corner to notch his fourth goal of the season which may have been even sweeter coming against one of his former clubs.
The game started quietly with few chances for either side, although Aaron Pierre and Alfie Mawson had to be at their best to deny Reuben Reid and Tyler Harvey respectively as the hosts attempted to live up to their tag as favourites to win the game.
Reid and Matt McClure then had both sides’ first efforts on target before the only goal of the game arrived courtesy of Hayes, who reacted quickest to ensure Aaron Pierre’s header made it across the line.
It was only the second goal Argyle had conceded at home all season and their response was to make two changes at the interval, although it did little to turn the match in their favour.
Jason Banton and Tyler Harvey failed with efforts from distance while at the other end, Sam Wood and Josh Scowen attempted to extend their advantage but couldn’t get past Luke McCormick.
Reuben Reid and Peter Hartley then missed the target as Plymouth desperately looked for a way back into the game, and in fact it was almost Wycombe who found the net when Max Kretzschmar was denied by McCormick after a knockdown by Scowen.
A stoppage time save from Matt Ingram denied River Allen as the visitors held on for a memorable victory, giving their 143 travelling fans plenty to smile about for the long journey home.
Speaking after the game, Gareth Ainsworth said: “There wasn't much in the game. We limited Plymouth's chances on our goal and we've taken our chance from the corner.
"I was really pleased with the way we defended and saw the game out. They changed shape in the second half to try and change and the boys adapted really well to that."
Commenting on Wycombe’s excellent record at Plymouth – where they have won on each of their last three visits – Ainsworth said: “It's been a happy hunting ground for me so far and long may that continue."
