Adam McGurk’s second-half header consigned Wanderers to a 1-0 defeat at the Pirelli Stadium.
Gareth Ainsworth made three changes to his side including handing a debut to on-loan Brentford centre-back Aaron Pierre. He lined up alongside Anthony Stewart at the heart of the Wanderers’ defence, while Sam Togwell and Nick Arnold also came into the side.
Leon Johnson, skipper Stuart Lewis and Max Kretzschmar were named amongst the substitutes, with Lewis’ omission meaning Matt Bloomfield was handed the captain’s armband.
Josh Scowen, who was given to move further forward in a more advanced role, had the first shot of the game when he dispossessed Matty Palmer in the fourth minute, but he dragged wide from 20 yards.
Neither side created much in the opening 10 minutes, but the best early break came from the Chairboys in the 13th minute. Morgan did well to roll his man after receiving Togwell’s pass before sprinting past Phil Edwards and delivering a low cross from the left, which Burton did well to clear from underneath their crossbar with Bloomfield and Reece Styche lurking.
The first effort on target came three minutes later when Billy Kee found room in the area following a free-kick, but he headed straight at Matt Ingram.
Adam McGurk fired over when well placed, before Wanderers broke and Morgan’s cushioned header was close to finding Scowen, who would have had a simple chance to give Blues the lead.
Burton’s strike partnership of Kee and McGurk looked by far the home side’s biggest threat, but Stewart and Pierre coped well with them in the opening half an hour.
However, the duo combined to almost give the hosts the lead in the 31st minute. Kee’s flick-on found McGurk 20 yards out from goal, and he shifted the ball on to his left foot before superbly curling past Ingram, but the ball rebounded back of the keeper’s right-hand post.
Pierre did well to deflect an effort behind after a quick Burton counter, but the hosts weren't having it all their own way as Morgan fired wide five minutes before the break after instantly controlling a high clearance.
Togwell was off target after Burton failed to deal with Arnold’s cross from the right, before the Reading loanee forced Rob Lainton into a save, the keeper parrying away his stinging strike as Ainsworth’s men ended the first half strongly.
Half-time: Burton 0-0 Wanderers
The hosts took the lead nine minutes after the restart when Kee headed back across goal for McGurk to plant a header past Ingram and into the far corner.
That goal lifted the hosts and Robbie Weir fired over from distance as they enjoyed their best spell of the game.
Burton right-back Phil Edwards did well to meet Morgan’s cross ahead of an on-rushing Styche as Chairboys searched for a way back into the contest.
The Brewers were close to adding a second in the 68th minute when David Gray shot wide from an acute angle after Ingram had parried away substitute Alex MacDonald’s fierce drive.
Steven Craig was introduced immediately after, signalling the end of Styche’s involvement, before Jon-Paul Pittman came on for Morgan.
Pierre was inches away from a debut goal in the 74th minute when he found space in-between two defenders to reach Arnold’s inswinging corner, but his header drifted just wide.
Ingram kept Blues in the game in the 78th minute when he denied Weir after Kee’s clever through ball and the striker then fired the rebound wide.
Ainsworth made his final change nine minutes from time, introducing Anthony Jeffrey for Arnold, but it was Ingram who was involved heavily again 60 minutes later when he denied Kee after Chairboys failed to clear their lines.
The introduction of Jeffrey brought a new dimension to the Wanderers attack, but no-one gambled on his dangerous cross and Burton were able to clear with five minutes remaining.
That was to be the final half chance as Burton ran the clock down well and nullified the Wycombe attack.
