We've Met Before - Hartlepool United

14 July 2014

The club were founded as Hartlepool United Football Athletic Company in 1908.

The Pools became founder members of the Third Division North when it was inaugurated in 1921. The club’s most famous connection began when Brian Clough took over as manager in 1965. The club play at Victoria Park which has a capacity of 7,856. Nowadays Gillette Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling is the most visible celebrity supporter of the club.

After establishing itself in the third tier following promotion under Chris Turner in 2002/03, the club suffered relegation to League Two in 2005/06. Youth team coach Paul Stephenson along with returning Director of Football Turner could not complete a late season revival. Danny Wilson was appointed manager for the following season and a remarkable campaign saw the Monkey Hangers return to League One immediately as Wilson steered the club to eight straight wins without conceding, eventually finishing runners up to Walsall.

Pools remained in League One courtesy of a 15th place finish in 2007/08 but Wilson was sacked in December 2008. Turner was reinstated as manager again, avoiding relegation in the next two seasons, although the club flirted with the drop in 2009/10 until a last day draw at Brentford. Mick Wadsworth replaced Turner a few weeks into the following season and the club again maintained its League One status, finishing 16th.

Wadsworth made way in December 2010, with former manager Neale Cooper returning to the club as his replacement. A 13th place finish, the highest the club had achieved since a play-off campaign in 2005, made for successful year but disaster followed in 2011/12 and the club were relegated with Cooper resigning and John Hughes unable to recover the dismal start.

Current manager Colin Cooper was then announced as the club’s new boss and despite a winless start to the last campaign they became entrenched in mid-table. Another slump, beginning with a 2-1 defeat at Adams Park, saw the club slide to 19th position. It was the second time the Chairboys had beaten the Pools by this scoreline that season, as a Max Kretzschmar brace earned a 2-1 win at Victoria Park.

Colin Cooper released Zak Boagey, Andy Monkhouse, Greg Rutherford and Simon Walton this summer. To date, experienced right back Stuart Parnaby and central defender Matthew Bates have been brought in.

The Blues travel to Hartlepool on Saturday 29th November 2014.

The return fixture at Adams Park takes place on Saturday 3rd January 2015.
