Report: Mansfield 2-2 Blues

25 January 2014

Wanderers were forced to settle for a point after being pegged back by Mansfield at the One Call Stadium.

Two superb strikes from midfielders Stuart Lewis and Josh Scowen gave the Blues a 2-0 lead, but Lee Stevenson and a late Ollie Palmer goal earned the hosts a share of the spoils.
New signings Jordan Mustoe and Reece Styche made their debuts, while the third recent arrival Anthony Jeffrey started on the substitutes’ bench.

After exchanging passes with Mustoe, skipper Lewis sent a superb 25-yard effort into the bottom right-hand corner to hand the Blues the lead on eight minutes.

Matt Ingram pulled off a sensational one-handed save shortly afterwards to keep out Matt Rhead’s fierce close-range volley.

The Blues responded and the impressive Nick Arnold flashed a 20-yard effort just past Alan Marriott’s right-hand post.

Ingram was again at his best to push Ross Dyer’s long-range dipping effort over the bar and ensure Wycombe went in ahead at the break.

Josh Scowen doubled the Blues’ advantage four minutes after the re-start, emphatically volleying his first goal of the season past Marriott from Nick Arnold’s inch-perfect cross.

The introduction of star man Sam Clucas sparked the Stags into life and they pulled a goal back when Lee Stevenson poked home inside the six-yard box after the Chairboys had failed to clear.

Clucas then headed over while, at the other end, McClure prodded another pinpoint Arnold delivery off target as Gareth Ainsworth’s men look to regain their two-goal advantage.

Mansfield upped the pressure but the Blues were standing firm, with their only real chance coming courtesy of a free-kick from Chris Clements which sailed over.

However, the Wanderers’ defences were broken with four minutes remaining. Ingram had pulled off a brilliant save to turn Clements’ effort on to the bar, but substitute Ollie Palmer was in the right place at the right time to tap home the rebound from close range.

Wycombe’s star stopper made sure of a point in injury-time, palming away a thunderous effort from Clements.
