Report: Blues go out on penalties

22 January 2014

Wanderers were knocked out at the semi-final stage of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup by Beaconsfield SYCOB after losing a penalty shoot-out.

It was 1-1 after two penalties each, with Kuffour scoring and Craig sending his spot-kick past the right-hand post for the Wanderers.

Beaconsfield refused to give up and a header from substitute Kofi Adams forced extra-time, which passed without too much in the way of goalmouth action.

Craig’s second of the night saw the Chairboys hit the front for the first time when he drilled home after latching on to Matt Spring’s through-ball on 75 minutes.

The Blues drew level once again seven minutes later when Kuffour’s goal-bound shot deflected in off Lee Angol.

There were chances at either end before Jon-Joe Bates tapped the ball into an empty net after a quick break from Beaconsfield on the half-hour mark.

The lead didn’t last long though as skipper for the night Steven Craig finished from close range following a cut-back from Jo Kuffour.

Former Wanderer Tom O’Regan handed the hosts a perfect start on four minutes when he curled in a fantastic 25-yard free-kick.

The Rams won 4-2 on spot-kicks at Holloways Park after the teams had played out an entertaining 3-3 draw in 120 minutes.
The two teams then traded penalties with Max Kretzschmar finding the net for the Blues, but Junior Morias couldn’t draw the Chairboys level at 3-3 and the Rams took full advantage to win the shoot-out 4-2 and book their place in the final.

Wanderers: Horlock, Ainsworth, Kretzschmar, Hause, Stewart, Kuffour, Spring, Kewley-Graham, Morias, Angol, Craig.
Unused subs: Ingram, McCoy, Bloomfield, McClure.
