Report: Wycombe 1-1 Luton

26 December 2014

Gareth Ainsworth signed a new long-term contract before watching his side earn a point in an absorbing 1-1 draw with Luton.

News of Ainsworth’s new contract was announced by chairman Andrew Howard in the Vere Suite before kick-off and the Blues fans had more reason to celebrate within three minutes of the start, when Paris Cowan-Hall netted for the fifth game running.

Referee Andy Woolmer played a smart advantage after a foul and it resulted in a corner, which was beautifully delivered by Joe Jacobson and nodded home by the in-form attacker.

The lead didn’t last long, however, and Jonathan Smith was the man to bring the scores level, neatly controlling Jacobson’s headed clearance before volleying exquisitely into the far corner.

After a frantic start, the game settled down and the only chances came from Sam Wood’s low shot and Andy Drury’s free-kick, both of which missed the target.

Aaron Pierre had a sight of goal when a deep cross found him in a pocket of space at the back post, but he mis-timed his header and saw the ball fly over the bar.

Then Andy Drury should have done better when he evaded the offside trap but shot tamely at Matt Ingram, under pressure from the recovering defenders, and then a low cross from Cowan-Hall agonisingly evaded everyone in the area when a just a touch could have taken it goalwards.

The half ended with the game tightly poised and there was a change at the break with Matt Bloomfield replacing Danny Rowe in midfield, but Town started brightly and went close when Luke Wilkinson’s header flew narrowly wide from a corner.

Then Wanderers were indebted to Ingram for a fine save to keep the scores level from Andy Drury’s effort following a fine move down the left, before Bloomfield volleyed over following Sido Jombati’s knockdown.

The game became more absorbing as it wore on, and after Ross Lafayette wasted a good opportunity for the visitors, Alfie Mawson’s poked effort was blocked inside the six-yard box from a well-worked free-kick.

Mawson was then denied a fairytale winner by a smart stop by Tyler in stoppage time, before a breathless 90 minutes came to a conclusion with both sides having given everything.
