Gaz: Respond against Rovers

22 April 2014

Gareth Ainsworth says his squad must move on as quickly as possible from Monday’s defeat at Fleetwood as they prepare for “the biggest game in Wycombe’s league history”.

Wanderers failed to capitalise on Alan Goodall’s early red card as high-flying Fleetwood went on to secure a 1-0 victory.

Now with Bristol Rovers visiting Adams Park on Saturday, and just goal difference keeping Blues out of the relegation zone, Ainsworth has stressed the importance of looking forwards.

He said: “It’s definitely a missed chance – that’s an understatement. We’ve seen the other results and they have all gone for us – it couldn’t have gone any better for us from that respect this weekend.

“I told the boys they looked like they had a hangover from our goal being disallowed on Friday.

“Once they went to 10 men, we looked the weaker side. We packed our midfield out but Morris was still able to dance through – I’m very disappointed with that. We looked a little bit rabbit in the headlights at times.

“It’s been a tough one but we now have to put it to bed as quickly as possible and concentrate on Bristol Rovers as we’ve got the biggest game in Wycombe’s league history. If we win that then we take huge strides towards staying up this season.

“There were too many under par. The passing wasn’t there, the cutting edge wasn’t there. It was a very frustrating day and I’ve had them in the dressing room for quite a while because I’m disappointed. It was a chance, but we have a huge chance now on Saturday.

“Results have gone for us and if you’re not ready to step up and play in Saturday’s fixture then you don’t deserve to be a league player because this is what it’s all about.

“You should relish a game like this and the fans will be down and they’ll bring a lot as well – I’m really looking forward to that one now.”
