The big preview – Crewe

19 November 2013

Wanderers will be looking to progress to the second round of the FA Cup for the first time since 2010/11 this evening.

Gareth Ainsworth’s men make the journey north to take on League 1 Crewe Alexandra in their first-round replay after an entertaining initial game ended 1-1 at Adams Park.

Former Chairboy Anthony Grant opened the scoring for the Alex in the fourth minute, but Paris Cowan-Hall capped off a fine Blues move to ensure a second bite of the cherry.
Wycombe go into the game without a win in five but they can take confidence from the way they’ve performed in the cup games this season.

The hosts also haven’t won in five matches, the last of which was a 5-0 thumping at Brentford on Saturday.

Blues boss Gareth Ainsworth – speaking to Chairboys Player

“We have to go again on Tuesday. It comes thick and fast now and I've just told them you have to get over these games quickly and get on the next one. I have got lads waiting to come in the team and they'll probably get their chance now.

“It's one away from the league, which is good for us, and we can hopefully get back on things there. There's a few players coming back into the fold who will want games - if people keep performing poorly they'll have to make way and people will come in and take their chance.

“There's a few players I expected a bit more from on Saturday. Energy levels might be a bit low and we need to make sure they are ready and firing on Tuesday.

“I always wanted to get back out there and put it right. I'm hoping I've got that atmosphere on Tuesday.

“It's going to be a tough game. It's a team who've been together a long time and a manager with a great philosophy who's been there a long time as well. We'll have to be at our best again to go against Crewe.

“I believe we can win that game after seeing them here. Sometimes this season we've been better on the road when we've been together at places, so hopefully we can get in the next round. It will be great to have that buzz around the cup run.”

Crewe chief Steve Davis – talking to crewealex.net

“You have got to believe that the players will come good for you. You have to have faith in the players and I think I’ve done that.

“We just don’t have enough at it at the moment and we need more of them at it. We need to have those fighters amongst us and have more of them. Some of them haven’t shown enough of that when we have gone behind.

“We need to restore some lost confidence and consistency because we have played ok and got a good result and then got battered. It has been a roller-coaster of results for us and we have to become more consistent and fight for each other.

“We are in a scrap and it is important we know that. We have got to do something about it now and react. We have time and we have to do it now before it becomes too late.”
