Gaz: "There's talking to be done"

7 May 2013

Gareth Ainsworth says he’ll be doing everything in his power to keep the majority of his squad together ahead of the 2013/14 season.

Talks are on-going with a number of out-of-contract players, while one-year deals have been offered to Lee Angol and Max Kretzschmar, and a one-year option on Junior Morias has been exercised.

“There’s talking to be done,” Ainsworth told Chairboys Player. “Without going into too much detail, I’m doing the best I can to hold on to our best players.

“Lee, Max and Junior are young lads and there is potential that we can make them better next year and hopefully they can start playing in the first team.

“Junior has played a lot already, but I still feel there is a lot of work to do with all three of them. Hopefully we can bring them on and they can add to our growing youth in the first team.”

Wanderers’ pre-season plans are already taking shape, but Ainsworth admits there is plenty more work to do before the squad return to training at the end of June.

He said: “It’s something I’m planning and there are phone calls every day. There are games to play and lots to think about like training sessions and fitness, the squad and team-building days. At the end of that the 3rd August is looming and the first game of the season which you’ve got to be ready for.

“I’ve got plenty of time, but that will go so quickly and I think a few of the players have already tweeted that they are missing football.

“I’ve been saying just take a rest because it’s going to be a tough season next year. Recharge those batteries because I want everyone’s levels to be full when they turn up at the end of June. We can go again and hopefully have a good season in League 2.

Ainsworth added: “I don’t fear any teams, I never have done and never will.

“On our day we can go and beat anyone, it’s just having that day consistently. A good season in League 2 is firstly improving on last season, we need to do that and all the stats point towards us doing better.”
