Report: Havant 0-1 Wanderers

6 July 2013

Dean Morgan’s second-half strike and an injury-time penalty save from Charlie Horlock ensured the Chairboys started pre-season with a 1-0 victory at Havant & Waterlooville.

Havant started brightly and had the first effort of the game in the eighth minute when skipper and former Brentford man Eddie Hutchinson fired off target from the edge of the area.
Ollie Palmer then headed wide after the ball had broken to the home side 20 yards out from goal.
Max Kretzschmar, who looked lively early on, fired in a low cross which just evaded Jon-Paul Pittman and then Josh Scowen blazed over from 20 yards whilst under pressure. Soon after,
Jo Kuffour curled over from just outside the box in the 24th minute after Matt Spring had driven forward from midfield.

Former Wanderers loanee Scott Bevan produced a fine fingertip save low to his left to parry away Kretzschmar’s superb 25-yard free-kick in the 36th minute, after the impressive Scowen had provided some impetus into the attack.

Gareth Ainsworth made 10 changes at the break with Charlie Horlock, Kortney Hause, Anthony Stewart, Nick Arnold, Stuart Lewis, Jesse Kewley-Graham, Paris Cowan-Hall, Sam Wood, Dean Morgan and a trialist coming on.

Palmer called Horlock into action soon after the restart, but the keeper was well positioned and made a comfortable stop.

Ainsworth’s men took the lead in the 63rd minute when Morgan fired in at the second attempt from eight yards. The goal owed much to a clever interchange between Arnold and Cowan-Hall on the right, which released the former who cut back for Morgan.

Horlock made a good stop low to his left to keep out Steve Ramsey’s 69th-minute strike, before Wood cleared Julian Owusu’s header off the line.

Owusu was proving a real threat for the hosts, but again Horlock came out on top in their duel with five minutes remaining after the striker had broken through on the right.

Havant were awarded a penalty in injury-time after a handball in the area, but Horlock produced his best save of the afternoon to dive full length to his right and parry away Perry Ryan’s spot-kick.
