Report: Blues 2-1 Chesterfield

5 January 2013

Kortney Hause and Jo Kuffour scored their first goals for the Chairboys as Wanderers returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Chesterfield.

The visitors took the lead through Jay O’Shea, but Gareth Ainsworth’s side hit back late in the first half when Hause forced the ball over the line.

Ainsworth made five changes to the starting line-up with Michael Harriman in for his full debut and Dean Morgan lining up against his former side. Dave Winfield returned to the team and assumed the captaincy, while Josh Scowen was back after missing the last two games through a hamstring injury and Charles Dunne completed the quintet.

Marvin McCoy missed out through illness, while Matt McClure failed to recover from a slight groin injury. Anthony Stewart, Bruno Andrade and Matt Spring were named amongst the substitutes.

The match was devoid of goalmouth action in the first 15 minutes, but Joel Grant was inches away from reaching Dunne’s low cross after a fine break from the left-back.

Morgan then cut in from the right and tried his luck from 20 yards, but his low strike was comfortably gathered at the near post by Chesterfield keeper Tommy Lee .

The returning Scowen was the stand-out player in the opening 20 minutes and the Spireites’ Mark Randall picked up a caution for the fouling the midfielder as he threatened to break forward from just inside his own half.

It was almost 1-1 a minute later when a loose ball fell to Wood on the edge of the area and he tried his luck with his weaker right foot and the ball flew inches wide with Lee well beaten.

Chances were now coming at both ends and O’Shea crashed a fine effort against the crossbar as the Chairboys failed to close down the on-loan MK Dons forward.

Richards headed O’Shea’s cross over the bar from 10 yards, but the Wanderers levelled a minute before the break when Scowen’s corner caused an almighty scramble in the Chesterfield area and Hause forced the ball home from close-range for his first professional goal.

Richards headed against the bar from a corner within 60 seconds of the restart and Hause then headed into the ground and at Lee as the Blues broke quickly.

A flowing move involving Harriman and Kuffour then led to Grant receiving the ball in space, but his effort was well blocked.

Randall should have done better for the visitors when he headed goalwards from close-range, but his effort lacked any power and Archer did well to tip the ball around the post.

Morgan thought he had made it 3-1 five minutes later after Kuffour had beaten two men and won a free-kick 25 yards out from goal. However, his curling effort hit the top of the crossbar and went over with Lee well beaten.

The majority of Chesterfield’s attacks were coming down the flanks, but they didn’t really threaten until eight minutes from time when Archer denied substitute Brennan Dickenson and Hause did superbly well to deflect Jack Lester’s effort wide.

Scowen fired wide at the end of another quick break involving Kuffour and Morgan as the Blues looked dangerous on the counter.

Scowen almost capped an impressive display with a third in injury-time, but he shot wide after dribbling past two defenders
