The big preview – Newport

24 December 2013

Wanderers return to Adams Park on Boxing Day when promotion-chasing Newport County visit South Bucks in Sky Bet League 2 (k.o 12.30pm).

Blues go into the game on the back of Saturday’s superb 4-1 win at Northampton Town, where goals from Jo Kuffour, Kortney Hause, Stuart Lewis and Dean Morgan saw the Chairboys return to form in style.

Newport on the other hand had a free weekend as their home clash with AFC Wimbledon was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Rodney Parade.

Justin Edinburgh’s side have adapted seamlessly to life in the Football League following last season’s promotion and they currently lie in sixth – just three points off the final automatic place with a game in hand.

Skipper Stuart Lewis

“It's been a tough few weeks and months for me on a personal note, but it's character building and it makes you stronger.

“When you're captain and you take that responsibility on, more scrutiny comes on you and it has been a tough few weeks and months. It will only make me stronger. Hopefully on a team note and a personal note we can turn a corner.

“Gaz said 'That's the start of it now'. We won't rest on our laurels, we've got a massive Christmas period and this is just the start.”

Justin Edinburgh – speaking to South Wales Argus

“The safety of players has to be the paramount and the quality of the game for the paying public is important as well.

“We fear nobody - we’ve got the best home record in the league so there’s no reason why we wouldn’t want to play it.

“But I think you’ve got to look at the bigger picture and the ref made the right decision.”

Team news

Gareth Ainsworth will be hoping to welcome some faces back into the squad after missing a number of players for the win at Sixfields.

Josh Scowen is back in contention after serving his one-game suspension, while Gary Doherty (back), Leon Johnson (hip) and Paris Cowan-Hall (knee) will be hoping to feature. The game will definitely come too soon for Steven Craig (thigh) and Jon-Paul Pittman (knee).

Former Wanderer Chris Zebroski will miss out for County, but defender Ismail Yakubu could return from a hip problem. Byron Anthony, Max Porter and Aaron O'Connor are all continuing their rehabilitation from long-term injuries.
