Gareth Ainsworth has challenged his side to build on Saturday’s stunning 4-1 victory at Northampton Town when high-flying Newport County visit Adams Park on Boxing Day (k.o 12.30pm).
Jo Kuffour, Kortney Hause, Stuart Lewis and Dean Morgan were all amongst the goals as Wanderers cruised to a convincing win, but Ainsworth insists there will be no let-up in training over the next few days.
He said: “We hopefully now will build on this. The highs and the lows are huge and trying to stay in the middle over the festive period’s going to be important for me.
“They’ll be training hard because we’ve got some tough games coming up. Newport and Fleetwood will be very tough, and Exeter and AFC Wimbledon are teams around us that we want to be beating.
Kuffour and Morgan led the line against the Cobblers and the duo both impressed with their all-round displays as well as their goals.
Ainsworth added: “Jo has been waiting patiently in the squad. He hasn’t started many games but he’s shown me in training in the last couple of weeks Jo Kuffour’s back to his best.
“He’s sharp and he can be a real pain for defenders. What a start for Jo – he was fantastic and ran his socks off. Dean was fantastic as well – they led the line so well that the rest of the boys had to follow.
“It wasn’t a 4-1 and we had four chances. We had a lot of chances and I might have a look at Dean Morgan’s header because I’m not sure that one was offside.
“I’m so pleased for the boys. They have been there for me, and so have the fans. We’ve had a tough time and these are nice moments.
“Thanks to everyone who’s stuck with us and kept with us because we always knew something would be round the corner. Hopefully we’ve proved it to a few people.”
