"A great learning curve"

10 December 2013

Gareth Ainsworth says highly-rated centre-backs Anthony Stewart and Kortney Hause will have both learnt a great deal from coming up against Kevin Davies last Saturday.

Davies scored the only goal of the game, but Stewart and Hause kept the former England striker relatively quiet as the duo continued to impress at the heart of the Wanderers defence despite their tender years.

“It was a great learning curve,” said Ainsworth. “Davies uses his body well, he backs in well and brings over people into play.

“He’s not going to turn and run in behind and not many people will against Kortney and Anthony, but they will learn from that without a shadow of a doubt.

“They’ll have learnt how to play against players like that and how to deal with it, but I thought they did it really well.

“The back four were all superb. Marvin McCoy’s been so consistent lately and Anthony and Kortney didn’t give any change at all to Beavon and Davies apart from the one worldie strike.

“Sam Wood as well made a fantastic tackle to save us and I think Stuart Beavon realises now we have grown as a club and we have got better and we’ve got players like that at the back.”

The defence weren't the only ones to impress as Josh Scowen was named man-of-the-match following another all-action display, and Ainsworth believes the 20-year-old is getting better and better.

He said: “Josh Scowen is Josh Scowen and it’s not a flash in the pan. He does it week-in, week-out and I’m surprised there hasn’t been more interest in him because he’s one hell of a player!

“He’s in that sitting role and he’s taken to that so well - not only that but he can also pass the ball and get things going from his sitting defensive midfield role.”

Wanderers are back in action at Adams Park again on Saturday when in-form Scunthorpe United visit South Buckinghamshire (k.o 3pm).
