McClure's back on track

16 August 2013

Matt McClure says he is hopeful about returning to the Wycombe squad for Saturday’s clash with Mansfield Town (k.o 3pm).

Last season’s joint-top scorer played the full 90 minutes of Tuesday’s friendly victory over Maidenhead United, and powerfully headed home the third of Blues’ five goals.

The run-out was the first time the striker had completed a full game since the 2-1 victory over Aldershot back on 13thApril.

When asked whether he is in contention for the squad, McClure replied: “You’ll have to speak to the gaffer about that!

“I feel like I can add to the squad even if it’s only half an hour, so I’m definitely getting there.

“There’s a big difference (between fitness and match fitness). You can do all the running you want on the training pitch, but the real stuff is in games.

“The more games you get the better you feel.”

McClure added: “It was nice (to get on the scoresheet), but the main thing was to get through the 90 minutes without having any reaction to the injury that I had before.

“I think the cross made it, it was a great cross, but it was nice to see it nestle in. The main thing is to get through your first game back, but I would have been disappointed if I hadn’t scored.”

Gareth Ainsworth has already fielded two different formations this season, and McClure believes if Wanderers’ pressing game is to be successful then the strikers must lead from the front.

“The boys up front need to get in their faces and then those behind can squeeze up,” he said.

“Straight away you put teams on the back foot and then they have to go to plan B.

“If you stop them playing then they can’t play it out of defence and you nick it off them. They then start panicking, go long and our centre-halves win it and we’re back on the attack.

“If they have comfortable possession on the ball then they can pick a nice pass, but if they’re rushed then they might shank it out for a throw or straight through to our keeper.”
