Gaz: Enjoy the special occasion

19 April 2013

Gareth Ainsworth says his squad should embrace being a part of history as they make the trip to Barnet on Saturday for the last ever game at Underhill.

Blues travel in good form, having won three of their last five games, and Ainsworth wants the Chairboys to continue that momentum as they push for a top-half finish.

“You’ve got to be proud to be playing in things like this,” he told Chairboys Player.

“I was lucky enough to be one of the ones who played in the last ever game on a plastic pitch in this country for Preston against Torquay in the play-offs in 1994.

“I always remember that game and the boys who play Saturday will be involved in the last ever game at Underhill which is a big occasion.

“Barnet are very proud to have been there for years and years. We’re expecting a tough game and it’s going to be a real battle. They’re fighting for their lives down there and being the last game there it will add extra spice.

“I know we’re taking a lot of people and I’m sure a lot of people will be supporting Barnet that day and saying ‘they were there’.

“We want to try and upset the party and we’re going to win. I still want to finish in the top half and a have a good end to the season which we can take into next year. Momentum is important and we’ll be giving our all to win.”

Ainsworth has implemented a number of different formations in recent weeks and the 39-year-old says that his players have responded in the best possible way.

He added: “What we’re saying in meetings they are taking on to the pitch. People who you think may struggle with formations and tactics have got on board and got it, and the players who have played for years at a higher level are loving it because they’re slotting in and playing different methods.

“It makes opposition teams think ‘what are they going to do this week’. It’s really pleasing, but the bottom line is the passion and effort and wearing the badge with pride.

“The next line up is can we give you some individual skill, can we give you some tactics that might win the game. The top line is the culture that we’ve created here – winners and doing things right as professionals.”
