Report: Southend 1-0 Wanderers

1 September 2012

Southend 1-0 Wycombe

Wanderers were second best in the opening period and fell behind to Britt Assombalonga’s close-range effort.

Chairboys improved after the break, but struggled to create clear-cut chances and slipped to defeat.

Matt Parsons looked lively straight away and he cleverly found Dennis Oli in the area, but he could only fire wide of Cameron Belford’s goal.

The hosts took the lead in the seventh minute when Britt Assombalonga finished from close-range after Matt Spring had done brilliantly to clear Ryan Cresswell’s initial header off the line.

John Spicer came close to doubling Southend’s lead in the 23rd minute when he reacted far quicker than any Wycombe player to a loose ball, but dragged his right-footed effort just wide.

Nikki Bull had to be alert to turn Anthony Straker’s header away from a corner, before Cresswell evaded Gary Doherty all too easily from the resulting corner and volleyed just over.

Straker fired wide late on in the first half after running unchallenged from halfway and the ease that Southend got a shot off summed up Wycombe’s disappointing display.

Jo Kuffour came on at half-time for his Wanderers debut, adding a different threat to the attack and Spring fired over the bar within 60 seconds of the restart.

Bull kept Wycombe in the contest a minute later when Parsons and Spring collided in midfield and Thompson’s missed clearance fell to Spicer who was denied by the keeper’s feet.

Spicer was again denied by Bull soon after following Mark Phillips’ flick-on from a long throw.

Chairboys were an improved side after the break, but they struggled in the final third and Spring tried his luck from distance eight minutes from time, only to fire way over the bar.

Wanderers piled forward late on, but the ball wouldn’t fall for them and the hosts held on for the win.
