Report: Chesterfield 3-1 Wycombe

15 September 2012

Goals from Chris Atkinson, Jack Lester and Sam Hird consigned 10-man Wycombe to a 3-1 defeat at Chesterfield.

Leon Johnson was sent-off in the 10thminute for pulling down Marc Richards when the striker was through on goal and things got worse before the break with Atkinson and Lester on target.

Wanderers got back into the contest 20 minutes from time when Olly Taylor, on his professional debut, put Neil Trotman under pressure and he sliced into his own net.

However, Hird made sure of the points seven minutes from time when he headed in Craig Westcarr’s free-kick.

Gary Waddock made two changes to the side that started against Cheltenham Town with Adam Thompson returning from international duty and new signing Dean Morgan in for his Wycombe debut. Jesse Kewley-Graham dropped to the bench with Dennis Oli ruled out through injury.

The hosts started brightly, but it was Wycombe who had the first effort when Jo Kuffour’s long-range effort deflected off a Chesterfield defender and wide of target.

Matt Parsons then collected a clever ball over the top and crossed, only for Charles Dunne to mis-kick when well placed in the area.

Craig Westcarr came close to giving the hosts in the seventh minute but he dragged his shot wide after turning past Adam Thompson. However, Chesterfield received a huge boost three minutes later when Stuart Lewis’ header inadvertently put Marc Richards through on goal and Leon Johnson fouled the striker and was shown a straight red card.

Wanderers responded well and Kuffour headed Dunne’s cross straight at Richard O’Donnell, but the home side went straight sown the other end and took the lead in the 14th minute.

Marc Richards was given far too much room down the left and he cut the ball back for an unmarked Chris Atkinson to finish from six yards.

Wycombe’s task became even tougher six minutes when Jack Lester headed in Sam Togwell’s wayward shot from close-range. Togwell tried his luck from distance again in the 26th minute and Bull did well to save low to his right.

Trotman had a goal-bound strike deflected behind by Doherty and it was all too easy for the hosts to create chances for themselves as Talbot, Westcarr and Richards all have shots in quick succession.

Wanderers were also looking dangerous in attack, though, with Joel Grant in particular looking a threat and he was giving Liam Ridehalgh nightmares doing the right.

The final chance of the first half fell to Lewis and he did well to control a dipping 20-yard volley, but O’Donnell was well placed to make a comfortable save.

Kuffour was inches away from slipping Morgan through soon after the restart, but chances were few and far between in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.

It should have been 3-0 in the 56th minute when Richards outmuscled Anthony Stewart wide on the right and crossed for an unmarked Lester, but the ball was just too far in front of the striker.

Doherty deflected Terrell Forbes’ goalbound strike wide of the post as Chesterfield went in search of a third goal which would have killed off the contest.

Grant was still the best outlet for Wycombe and he came close to scoring a superb individual goal. The winger picked the ball up midway inside the Chesterfield half, beat three men and then cut inside before curling over the bar from the edge of the area.

Olly Taylor came on in the 70th minute for his professional debut and he made an instant impact as the Blues reduced the deficit. The striker made a nuisance of himself from Spring’s corner and centre-back Neil Trotman sliced the ball into his own net.

Chesterfield secured all three points seven minutes from time when skipper Sam Hird headed in Westcarr’s free-kick following Dunne’s foul on Tendayi Darikwa.
