Ainsworth's attacking intent

30 November 2012

Gareth Ainsworth says he will continue his attacking philosophy as the Wanderers welcome Bristol Rovers to Adams Park on Saturday (k.o 3pm).

Chairboys have taken the game to their opponents in recent matches and got the rewards in the last two games with victories over Burton Albion and Rotherham United.

“The spirit is high and the lads are buzzing and rightly so as they’ve done really well,” Ainsworth told Chairboys Player. “It’s not just been the results, but the performances as well.

“It was difficult for me to keep telling the boys that the result would come without it actually coming. I thought they were going to stop believing me, but I’m glad they didn’t as Saturday was just reward for the last five or six performances. It could have been like that in a lot of the games.

“I’m glad it’s come and I’m glad for the lads that played and did really well. Even the lads that didn’t play are buzzing – we have a real good spirit going.

“I keep saying that we are not going to win every game, but we will try. We will play attacking football and go to try and break our opponents down and be resilient.

“That’s the word I’ve brought into the club, it’s about being tough and resilient. You’re a footballer and you give your all for Wycombe Wanderers – that’s what I want and that’s what they’re all giving me. It’s fantastic and makes my job a lot easier.”

Ainsworth sees the fixture against Rovers as a second chance following the abandonment of the original match and has challenged his side to take it with both hands.

He said: “It’s not often you get a second chance in football and we’ve got one. I always say to the boys in training that when you are on the ball you don’t get another chance on it. You have to do it right first time.

“It’s one of those where we are going to have to grab it with both hands and say we’ve been given this chance, let’s take it.

“It’s a different Wycombe and I’m sure it will be a different Bristol Rovers. We have definitely improved and I believe we are firing really well at the moment.

“It’s a pleasure to be at the helm. The fans have been great and the whole club seems to be coming together. If we keep this spirit and drive going then I can’t see anyone stopping us and I really mean that - we don’t fear anyone in this league.”
