Waddock relishing Rangers visit

30 July 2012

Wycombe boss Gary Waddock says he is looking forward to going up against one of his former clubs when QPR visit Adams Park tomorrow (k.o 7.30pm).

Waddock made his QPR debut in 1979 and went on to make more than 200 appearances for the west London side during an eight-and-a-half-year spell at Loftus Road.  The 50-year-old re-joined the club as part of their coaching staff after hanging up his boots, before becoming permanent first-team manager in June 2006.

He said: “It was a big test and it was one hell of a workout for our lads. In terms of where we want to go and what we want to achieve, that has helped us prepare for the season.

Wanderers lost 3-0 to Fulham on Saturday, but two of the goals came in the final five minutes and Waddock was pleased with the effort shown by his side.

“I had a good relationship with the fans and it will be a nice evening.  It’s exactly the same for Gaz, it would be great for him to hopefully get a fantastic reception from the QPR fans when he enters the field of play.”

“It didn’t work out on the management side, but I had a fantastic time and it’s a great club. I’m delighted to see what they are trying to do to take the club forward.

I possibly did every role there, player, every coaching role and was able to be the manager. “ Waddock told Chairboys Player.  ” “I had a number of years there and it was a big part of my career,
“I was disappointed in the end because we conceded two late goals but, overall, I thought we did well.

“Defensively we had to be switched on with the way that they pass the ball and the runs that they make. We have worked on that side and we were solid and organised and Bully was excellent. We are not looking too much into scorelines but how we are shaping up. That is the important thing.”
