Stars from five different decades got together to compete in the fourth annual Ex-Players Association golf tournament recently.
In rare sunshine, over 40 members supported the great work put in by organisers Ken Wilson and Jack Tomlin and made it to Winter Hill Golf Club where they saw a new champion crowned.
Stuart Thompson, who played for the Blues between 1965-69, added his name to the Roll of Honour on his first appearance - following on from Terry Reardon, Joe Kotvics and Jimmy Hay. Most were delighted to see him lift the trophy as it prevented a virtual clean sweep by Howard Kennedy, who took the prizes for longest drive, nearest the pin and putting king as well as being a member of the team with Keith Ryan, Steve Gardner and Steve Brown who snapped up the Brian Lee Trophy.
As Howard - one of the kingpins of manager Lee’s hugely successful sides of the 1970s - was also one of the official scorers, mutterings of a mutiny were only just quelled. Some suggested Kennedy also deserved the Oldest Competitor prize and Bodger’s Booby.
In the end these went to 79-year-old Jim Truett - one of three players from the 1957 FA Amateur Cup Final team with Jack Tomlin and Len Worley who turned out alongside other 1950’s veterans Derek Draffan and John Reardon - while Steve Brown fought off several worthy challengers to edge the highest scoring round. Club record scorer Tony Horseman, whose efforts the previous year, inaugurated the award, was not amused…
An Olympic theme was maintained throughout with the Team Captains’ ‘Above The Call of Duty’ awards especially popular. These went to Derek Draffan, Keith Samuels, Dave Roberton, Dave Burgess, John Delaney and Steve Brown. A brilliant day and the course has already been reserved for next July.
The next event on WWEPA’s busy calendar is the annual bowls tournament. Rain and cold meant a postponement in June. This has now been rescheduled at Wycombe Bowls Club for Wednesday 8th August at 1.30pm. All are welcome to come along to give support.
The Ex-Players Association will also be working closely with the Wycombe Wanderers Trust since their takeover of the club and members will be turning up in their droves for the 125th anniversary celebrations on September 22nd before the match with AFC Wimbledon.
