Team spirit is key for Ainsworth

7 December 2012

Gareth Ainsworth says the spirit within the Wycombe squad is one of the main reasons for their recent fine form.

Wanderers go in search of a fourth successive npower League 2 victory and their third in a row at Adams Park on Saturday when Morecambe make the long trip south (k.o 3pm).

“There is something starting here, you can feel it in the dressing room and around the place,” Ainsworth told Chairboys Player.

“There are comparisons to the lower teams I played with, the Lincolns, Port Vales and Preston when I was there.

“The spirit was there and those teams went on to get promoted and achieve things. Hopefully we can do the same. What I’m aiming for is to make Wycombe Wanderers a better club, a more successful club.”

Ainsworth added: “People questioned our home form and were right to do so because it wasn’t the best, but we seem to have turned that around in recent weeks and if we can do it again on Saturday then people will start taking notice and think ‘if they can do this away from home and now at home then how far can this team go’.

“I want people to think ‘how far can you go?’. There’s no limit, there’s no ceiling. Get up there and go as high as you can.”

Morecambe come into the game on the back of three defeats in their last four games, but Ainsworth is well aware of the threat the Shrimps will pose.

He said: “Mr Bentley will get them up for the game and he’s a winner. They had a good start to the season, but have had a stutter in the middle and hopefully we can capitalise on that.

“(Kevin) Ellison will be a handful. He’s in good form at the moment and scoring goals, but every striker who has been in form and come up against Dave and Johnno have been kept quiet - they’ve been fantastic. If we can keep him quiet then I think we’ve got a good chance of taking the points.”
