Gareth Ainsworth says Wycombe’s Christmas celebrations will have to be put on hold as the Chairboys enter a busy festive period, starting with a trip to Cheltenham Town on Boxing Day (k.o 3pm).
January. thBlues then make journey to Plymouth Argyle on Saturday before home games with Exeter City on New Year’s Day and Chesterfield on Saturday 5
“I’ve said to the players that I’ll give things back to them if they do things for me and they’ve not half done it for me,” Ainsworth told Chairboys Player. “They’ll be off on Christmas Day but they know the rules and what to do.
“We can have our proper Christmas some other time in the year, but I want everyone to be with their families enjoying it. It’s really good to enjoy it while you’re winning, but we have several games coming up and we need to build on it.
“Christmas Day is big in our house. The missus is South American and they bring in the party atmosphere. I’ll be the one sat in the corner taking it easy and drinking water. I’ll still have the turkey dinner, but I’ll have to curb it on the mince pies!
“I love Christmas. I love the Boxing Day and New Year’s Day games, it’s become part of the festive tradition. You get Christmas and you get the presents and then you get the game on Boxing Day. If you’re a football fan then you obviously look forward to it and I’m no exception.”
Wanderers’ opponents Cheltenham currently occupy the final automatic place in npower League 2 and Ainsworth is anticipating a thorough examination of his side.
He added: “It will be a tough game. Cheltenham are flying high, they like to get the ball down and play. We’ll do what we do and combat it.
“We train hard and work hard on everything we do. We still work hard on things we did four and six weeks ago. We are still doing those things now because they got us results.”
