Matt Ingram saved a first-half penalty before Adam Phillip’s goal 15 minutes from time earned a talented Chelsea U21 side a 1-0 victory at Adams Park.
Ingram, who is celebrating his 19thbirthday today, was the busier keeper in the first half and produced a fine save low to his right to deny Phillip 10 minutes before the break.
The keeper did even better seven minutes later when he parried away Lewis Baxter’s low penalty after conceding the spot-kick himself for a foul on Phillip.
Wanderers created more chances after the break and half-time substitute Junior Morias forced the Chelsea keeper into action after breaking down the right and cutting into the penalty area.
The only goal of the game came in the 75th minute when Phillip latched on to a through ball and brilliantly rounded Ingram before slotting home despite the best efforts of a defender on the line.
Substitute Lee Angol was inches away from securing the Blues a draw late on, but his glancing header took a slight deflection off a defender and drifted inches wide.
Wanderers: Ingram, Ighorae, Ehui, Trialist, Kewley-Graham, Trialist, Spring, Kretzschmar (Angol 60), Grant, Oli (Taylor 60), Kuffour (Morias 46).
An interview with Ingram will be on Chairboys Player later today.
