Sunderland vs Wycombe Wanderers
Saturday 28th August 2021, k.o. 3pm
Stadium of Light
Sky Bet League 1
Referee: John Busby
Wanderers' unbeaten start faces a test from fellow promotion hunters Sunderland in the fifth meeting between the two sides, and if previous encounters are anything to go by, this could be the most entertaining game of the season so far.
1-1 draws at both grounds in 2018/19 weren't without talking points; the Chairboys were pegged back late on by both, with discipline going out the window in the closing stages of the Adams Park encounter, and Wycombe's 1-0 home win the following years ruffled plenty of feathers in the north-east and may have been a catalyst in inspiring the Black Cats to a 4-0 demolition job.
Sunderland are now under the tutelage of Lee Johnson, a close friend of Gareth Ainsworth, and have started the campaign excellently with five wins in league and cup, only slipping up once in a 1-0 defeat at Burton.
An overhaul of their squad in the summer hasn't hampered their progress, with Johnson's new recruits gelling quickly alongside some familiar faces such as Luke O'Nien, who'll come up against his former club while Josh Scowen lines up in light and dark blue against the club he left in the summer.
Gareth Ainsworth welcomed Ryan Tafazolli back from injury in the midweek cup success at Stevenage so he's available to provide competition in defence, while David Stockdale, Jack Grimmer, Josh Scowen, Curtis Thompson and others will be refreshed following their absence from the side at Stevenage. Jason McCarthy, Dominic Gape, David Wheeler and Nick Freeman are working their way back to full fitness.
Sunderland could welcome back Northern Ireland international Corry Evans after an injury absence.
