Report: Wycombe 2-2 Brentford

Chairboys put in great performance against Championship opponents.

20 July 2019

An impressive display on the Chairboys' first home outing in pre-season ensured an entertaining 2-2 draw against Championship side Brentford.

A well taken strike from a trialist striker and bullet header from Adebayo Akinfenwa fired the home side into the lead - but were pegged back by two brilliantly orchestrated moves by the Bees.

Gareth Ainsworth's men came firing out of the blocks immediately from kick-off and looked a threat in the opening stages of the match.

Debutant Paul Smyth ran the Brentford defence ragged and turned provider as the Chairboys fired themselves in-front. The Northern Ireland-international darted into the box before sending in a well-timed cross for the trialist striker who coolly tao home beyond the onrushing Luke Daniels.

Thomas Frank's side, which included Pontus Jansson who recently arrived at the club from Leeds United, looked for an instant response. Fredrik Hammar fired his effort well over the crossbar from just inside the penalty area, before Jan Zamburek saw his low cross blocked directly into the path of Ryan Allsop.

With ten minutes left on the clock in the first-half, the visitors managed to pull one goal back. Allsop pulled off a great reaction stop to deny Zamburek, but with plenty of space in the area, Hammar managed to beat his man and bundle home the rebound.

Several changes at the interval meant there was a new look to the starting eleven, which included the likes of Nick Freeman, Scott Kashket and Alex Samuel - but Brentford looked strong and started the better of the two sides.

Danish striker Emiliano Marcondes rifled a 30-yard free kick which sailed over the wall, and forced Allsop into a quick save to push the ball away from danger.

Moments later and the Bees pulled the game level. Ali Coote did well to dart into space and get on the end of a pass from Josh Dasliva to fire his effort onto the post. The ball bounced directly into the path of the on running Marcondes to tap home.

Wycombe Wanderers: Allsop; McCarthy (Trialist 62), Stewart, Trialist, Trialist (Trialist 46); Smyth (Kashket 46), Gape, Pattison (Freeman 46), Trialist (Trialist 46); Bloomfield (Mackail-Smith 62); Akinfenwa (Samuel 46).
