The Big Match Preview: Wycombe vs Peterborough

All you need to know.

2 November 2018

Team news, tickets, travel and more...

Wycombe Wanderers vs Peterborough United
Saturday 3rd November 2018, k.o. 3pm
Adams Park
Referee: Ben Toner
Match Sponsor: Rush Trampoline Park

Wycombe - with three successive home wins - take on a Posh side who've won seven of their eight away games in the league so far this season, and top the goalscoring charts. It's Gareth Ainsworth vs Steve Evans, it's a reunion for Craig Mackail-Smith, and it's the start of a mouthwatering run of fixtures in November.

So fireworks weekend seems an appropriate time for this match, with both sides eager to continue momentum; Wanderers need to erase the setback of last weekend's loss to Walsall and carry on their fine form at home, while the Posh have overcome a minor wobble to record back-to-back victories.

This match marks the first meeting between the two clubs since a League Cup encounter way back in 2009, when Craig Mackail-Smith was part of a Peterborough side that won 4-0 at Adams Park, and he meets his former club for the first time since leaving them at the end of his second spell in 2017.

Ainsworth and Evans have plenty of mutual respect for each other's managerial endeavours but by the time they meet for a drink in the office at full-time, it's likely they'll be winding down at the end of another breath-taking 90 minutes of action if recent high-scoring games are anything to go by.

Team news

Anthony Stewart and Nathan Tyson stepped up their recovery from injury this week by training outdoors while Matt Bloomfield's return could come sooner than first expected. Randell Williams is also in contention after overcoming a knock.

Steve Evans has hinted at making a couple of changes in the interests of squad rotation, though Tyler Denton is expected to keep his place at left-back despite Sir Colin Daniel's return from suspension.

Man in the middle
Ben Toner has had a quiet start to the season, showing just 20 yellow cards and one red in 11 matches so far.

However he dished out nine yellows last time he was in charge of a Wycombe game - the 0-0 draw at Notts County in March - and sent Magpies boss Kevin Nolan to the stand.

Football darts
Match sponsors Rush Trampoline Park will be bringing their inflatable football darts game for fans to test their skills in the Printkick Fan Zone ahead of kick-off.

The activity will be based next to the marquee inside the entrance gate; the challenge is simple. Attain the highest possible score with three shots of a velcro football!

Player of the Month
Rush will also be presenting the winner of the Rush High Wycombe Player of the Month award for October on the pitch at the end of the warm-up.

Poppies for sale
Representatives of the High Wycombe branch of the Royal British Legion - including a local unit of sea cadets - will be selling poppies around the stadium before the match.

Minute's silence
Ahead of kick-off, Wanderers president Ivor Beeks - who is also vice-president of the High Wycombe branch of the Royal British Legion - will introduce a minute's silence, to commemorate Remembrance Weekend and also the victims of the helicopter tragedy at Leicester City last Saturday.

Shop
There's a flash sale in the shop on all goalkeeper kit items, which are reduced by 30% for one day only. What's more, everyone who purchases a goalkeeper shirt will be entered into a draw to win a pair of either Ryan Allsop or Yves Ma-Kalambay's signed gloves! Open from 10am.

Parklife
Alex Samuel stars on the cover while inside there's a column from Ladies star Tara Woodward, a recap of previous encounters with the Posh, thoughts of Gareth Ainsworth, Jason McCarthy, Ryan Allsop, Nick Tunney, Ian Baker and much more.

Report: Wycombe 1-0 Peterborough

Bryn Morris's free-kick secures a fourth home win in a row.

3 November 2018

A deflected free-kick from Bryn Morris secured the Chairboys a narrow home victory against high-flying Peterborough United.

Fred Onyedinma was brought down on the edge of the penalty area, which saw  Bryn Morris step up and score from the resulting set-piece 66 minutes into the second half.

After a cagey first half with few chances created from both sides, the scores were level going into the break, despite efforts from the likes of Onyedinma and Joe Jacobson.

Goalkeeper Ryan Allsop starred for the Chairboys making a number of important saves for Gareth Ainsworth's side.

Despite a nervy final few minutes, Wycombe's backline stood firm, which saw the Chairboys hold on to take all three points.

Gareth Ainsworth made four changes to his starting eleven from the weekend with Dominic Gape, Darius Charles, Randell Williams and Alex Samuel coming into the side, replacing Michael Harriman, Curtis Thompson, Craig Mackail-Smith and Adebayo Akinfenwa.

The visitors had an early opportunity to test the Chairboys’ backline six minutes in when Matt Godden fizzed a low cross into the penalty area, however the ball was unable to pick out the in-running Joe Ward, which eventually curled away from danger.

Wycombe’s first attempt on goal came a quarter of an hour in when Fred Onyedinma’s snapshot flew over the crossbar, failing to test Posh goalkeeper Aaron Chapman.

Chapman however was forced into making his first save of the afternoon 20 minutes in when he had to stretch and tip Joe Jacobson’s well-struck free-kick away for a corner.

Five minutes later saw an audacious cross-come-shot from Bryn Morris curl well away from goal just before Posh forward Ivan Toney’s strike from a tight angle hit the side netting.

The best chance of the first half came for the visitors 43 minutes in when Rhys Bennett found himself inside the box to strike at goal, however keeper Ryan Allsop got down well to deny the defender from breaking the deadlock.

Both sides went into half time knowing that they had to do a lot more to break down each other’s defensive units and find a way of taking the lead.

Ten minutes into the second half saw a header from Paris Cowan-Hall float just over the crossbar just moments before a brilliant chance fell to Posh striker Matt Godden when Toney slipped the striker in through on goal, however keeper Allsop did ever so well to stand his ground and make a brilliant save, tipping the ball away for a corner.

With the game still level, Onyedinma drove towards goal only to be taken down right on the edge of the penalty area by Ryan Tafazolli, who was booked for the foul.

From that resulting free-kick, the Chairboys took the lead 66 minutes in as Bryn Morris stepped up and rifled his shot through the wall, which took a deflection along the way, with the ball nestling into the bottom left corner.

Three minutes later, a deep cross from the far left by Alex Samuel had to be dealt with by keeper Chapman who managed to swat the ball away from soaring into the top left corner.

After doing ever so well to fill the void of target man Akinfenwa, Samuel was replaced 10 minutes from time by former Posh forward Craig Mackail-Smith.

Posh substitute Jason Cummings managed to get a shot away inside the penalty area, however his tame effort was comfortably saved low down by keeper Allsop.

Onyendinma then came close to doubling Wycombe’s lead when he tested goalkeeper Chapman late on from a tight angle inside the area, after he danced his way through the Posh backline.

Despite a nervy 5 minutes of stoppage time, the Chairboys were able to hold on to victory, seeing Gareth Ainsworth’s side win their fourth successive home match as well as keeping an impressive clean sheet against the league’s top scorers.
