A goal from Randell Williams hours after resigning for the club earned Wycombe a 1-1 draw at Maidehead United in their final pre-season fixture ahead of the 2018/19 season.
It was a decent start to the game as the rain grew heavier at York Road. Josh Kelly fashioned the game’s first chance but Chairboys skipper Adam El-Abd did well to clear the danger.
Maidenhead would have an early lead though, and it was Ryan Bird who opened the scoring after 11 minutes. Max Worsfold beat Sido Jombati down the left and whipped in a teasing low ball which the Magpies’ striker gobbled up inside the six-yard box.
Wycombe’s first shot on target came on 29 minutes. Sam Saunders was played into space down the left, cut it back to Matt Bloomfield who moved on to his left foot and drew a save from goalkeeper Carl Pentney.
The shot-stopper was involved again shortly before half-time; sticking out a leg to thwart Paris Cowan-Hall as he attempted to round him, before Saunders curled over from the follow-up.
Half-Time: Maidenhead 1-0 Wycombe
The second period was five minutes old when Jombati sent a header crashing against the post from a Joe Jacobson free-kick out from the left. Akinfenwa would then send a header just past the post from a corner soon after as the Chairboys stepped up the pace.
Two more changes for Wycombe saw Williams make his first appearance for the club after resigning on a six-month loan deal from Watford. Williams was joined on the pitch by Michael Harriman for Cowan-Hall and Jombati.
Craig Mackail-Smith and Nick Freeman entered the field in place of Adebayo Akinfenwa and Nathan Tyson who looked to have taken a knock on 70 minutes. Soon after Ma-Kalambay, a half-time sub, made an important stop with his feet as Nana Owusu looked to beat him at his near post.
Wanderers were level with 71 minutes gone and it Williams who got it with an unstoppable strike after good work from Mackail-Smith down the left saw the forward teed up 8-yards out from goal.
The Chairboys final change of the evening saw Bloomfield make way for Trialist-CF. Owusu looked for the winner on 86’ from the edge, but Ma-Kalambay was alert to the danger and got across to his right to stop his curling effort.
One apiece was how it would remain as Wanderers' pre-season schedule came to an end. Next up, Blackpool at home for the opening day of the Sky Bet League One season on Saturday 4th August.
