'DOBBO': "WE'RE GELLING WELL"
U18s boss Richard Dobson has told wwfc.com that he has been very impressed with his side's start to the season after taking six points from their opening two games.
He said: "We've made a positive start to the season with the squad gelling well at this early stage. It is important that the players continue to build on recent performances and progress as individuals and as a team as the season goes on.
"The experience of playing reserve team football will prove invaluable to them as they bid to make that next step up the footballing ladder and they must now earn the right to play reserve team football with consistent performances at youth team level."
These comments come after an opening day 4-1 win against Rushden & Diamonds at Bisham Abbey, before following that up on the 30th August with a 5-2 victory at Luton Town.
Saturday's game with Northampton was called off due to a waterlogged pitch and Dobson's team are next in action on the 20th September when they travel to take on Southend United.
The 4-1 win against Rushden & Diamonds on August 16th showed how far the team had come from the end of the previous campaign when Diamonds beat a virtually same Wanderers side 2-0.
Matt McClure opened the scoring as early as the third minute when his 20-yard shot took a deflection past the Rushden keeper. However, the early advantage was soon surrendered but Jerome Federico and then George Daly scored to take the Blues in 3-1 at the break.
Wanderers continued to press forward looking for more goals but they had to wait until the final minute to wrap up the win when substitute Sam Belcher chipped the keeper from 25 yards after a surging run that had started in his own half.
But if you thought 'Dobbo' was happy after the opening game then he was delighted after the second win at Luton Town, especially after Wanderers went behind after only five minutes.
He said: "Whilst the scoreline was pleasing it was the quality of all five goals and the second half performance in particular which caught the eye."
Despite going behind early on, Pietro Palladino was on hand to equalise for the Blues just before the half-hour mark after finishing off a flowing move on the volley following good work from Sam Belcher and Dan Fitchett.
The Blues began to dominate proceedings and their pressure told on 52 minutes when David Pearce rocketed in a volley into the top corner, a goal Dobson described as "real quality". However, the lead didn't last long as a mistake in the Blues defence allowed Luton's centre-forward to nip in and level it at 2-2.
Another bit of David Pearce magic put the Blues back in front after he curled in a free-kick from the corner of the 18-yard box. Tom O'Regan then made it 4-2 after he finished off another sweeping move which included a nice pass from Craig Read and an exquisite flick from Pietro Palladino.
And Dan Fitchett rounded off the scoring within a minute of the team making it 4-2 when he coolly slotted the ball under the keeper after being fed by the impressive Palladino.
