U18's OUT OF PUMA CUP

Posted on: Tue 26 Feb 2008

Wycombe were narrowly defeated in the quarter-final of the Puma Youth Alliance Cup, as they went down 3-1 to Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Seagulls scored after just 14 minutes after a brilliant long range volley put the home side in front.

However Richard Dobson's side responded immediately when reserves' star Dan Fitchett, who linked up with Scott Shulton before finishing coolly. Albion restored their lead when a corner kick cannoned off a series of player in side the box, nestling in the corner of the net before most of the players on the field had realised what had happened.

It was three moments later, as the Seagulls took advantage of a goalkeeping error to extend their lead.

The second half was a different game as Wycombe came out all guns blazing, dominating for the entire period.

Headers from Dan Fitchett and Calum Botham were both well saved and an Elliot Brathewaite effort narrowly crept over the bar, but in the end The Seagulls somehow held firm to secure their passage into the semi-finals.

"It was a Jekyll and Hyde performance, the first half cost us dearly as we could not make our dominance count in the secon," said manager Richard Dobson.

"We tried to claw back the damage done in the first half but despite creating good chances throughout the game couldn't quite do it."
