BLUES EDGED OUT BY UNITED
By Ben Campbell
Wanderers' U18s side lost 2-1 to Peterborough United at Bisham Abbey on Saturday in their latest Puma Youth Alliance fixture.
Richard Dobson's starting XI included four U16 players, three of which played in the Blues defence.
Only two 2nd year apprentices took part in the South East conference game and they couldn't do anything about the first half brace from Peterborough winger Evans Kouassi.
Matty Phillips did come close for the Blues during the first half but his free-kick cannoned back off the crossbar. However it wasn't long before Dobson's side pegged their opponents back and it was Daniel Fitchett who got the goal when he finished well just minutes after the interval.
Wanderers dominated the remainder of proceedings creating a string of chances but couldn't make their pressure tell and the game ended 2-1.
Richard Dobson said: "It took us fifteen or twenty minutes to get started but when we did, we probably were the better team. It was unfortunate we couldn't convert one our chances but it was an encouraging second half performance.
"We will continue to field younger players for the rest of the season. The second year apprentices will go out on loan to gain experience and the younger guys will come in and play. We are preparing for next season now. Our boys will be better for it in the long run and it will stand them in good stead for the future.
"The lads may have to take a couple of results on the chin at the moment while they get used to playing at the higher age group. I was pleased with what I saw from a very inexperienced team. A bad result isn't always the worst thing the lads character will build and they will improve."
