UNDER-18s BACK WITH A BANG
By Matt Cecil
Wanderers' Under-18s got back to winning ways with an excellent 3-1 victory over Luton Town on Saturday in Richard Dobson's first match in full charge of the side.
The youth team had enjoyed an excellent start to the current campaign before the Christmas and picked up where they left off after a three week break with a comfortable win over the Hatters, who were level on points with the Blues ahead of kick-off.
A brace from centre-back Jamie Turley set Wycombe on their way to victory as two clever set-pieces brought about both goals, and Daniel Fitchett made it three before Luton pulled back a late consolation.
And Dobson was delighted to kick off 2008 with the win:
"It was an excellent return to action after Christmas," he said. "Luton played a clever 4-3-3 formation which asked a few questions of us but our boys did really well to nullify the threat and we thoroughly deserved the win."
Wanderers finished the match with four 16-year-olds on the pitch, which is a huge compliment to the club's faith in the Centre of Excellence, which of course was managed by Richard Dobson before he stepped up to take the role of Under-18s coach when Greg Heald left in December.
"We're working hard at nurturing the younger lads and it's paying dividends," Dobson said. "They did really well and showed a great work ethic and it bodes well for the future."
Striker George Daly featured for 45 minutes after his recent displays for Paul Lambert's senior squad, and Dobson added that the youngster is keeping his feet on the ground:
"George is still working hard for us and he looked very lively in the first half with his pace. We only gave him half a match because of his recent exertions in the first team but he was excellent again."
Team: James Reading, Dean Wallace, Jamie Turley, Craig Read, Darrell Ellams, Matt Phillips (Pietro Palladino, 75), Eddie Savage, Jordan Lumsden, Tom O'Regan, Daniel Fitchett (Jerome Federico, 75), George Daly (Chidi Ogbuagu, 45).
The Under-18s face Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday at the University of Sussex Sports Ground in Falmer before entertaining Rushden and Diamonds at home next week.
