REPORT: AINSWORTH BACK WITH A BANG

Posted on: Tue 09 Mar 2010

Gareth Ainsworth scored on his return to action as Wanderers' reserve side beat Watford 2-0 at Boreham Wood FC.

Ainsworth, suspended since his sending off in the 1-0 win over Millwall, set the Blues on their way in the 49th minute with a stunning 40-yard volley before Dan Fitchett completed the victory with 15 minutes remaining.

Joining the experienced Ainsworth in Wycombe's starting line-up was fellow first teamers Lewis Hunt, Matt Bloomfield and Lewis Montrose.

Richard Dobson's men took the game to Watford early on, with Wanderers' attacking force causing the Hornets' defence problems.

However, it was the home side that registered the first effort on goal. Neat build-up play from Jure Travner and Cole Penney set up Piero Mingoia, who curled an effort just wide of Steve Arnold's goal.

Wycombe responded but, like Mingoia's shot, Ainsworth's effort went wide of the target after Fitchett had beaten his marker Eddie Oshodi to find the midfielder.

Two goal-line clearances, firstly to deny Lewwis Spence and then Matt Bloomfield, kept Watford on terms just after the half hour mark.

Minutes later and Bloomfield threatened again, forcing Jonathan Bond into a smart save to gather the midfielder's low shot.

Wanderers continued to press and the impressive Ainsworth headed over at the bar post after a ball in from the opposite flank.

However, the 36-year-old didn't have to wait too much longer to break the deadlock. Firstly he pounced on Bond's goal-kick before sending a stunning 40-yard volley back over the Watford keeper's head to put the Blues in front in some style on 49 minutes.

Watford rallied and Will Buckley rifled a shot into the side-netting after a swift counter-attack from the hosts.

But the Chairboys made the game safe on 75 minutes when young striker Dan Fitchett finished from close range after a teasing ball in from the right-hand side.

Steve Arnold was twice called upon in the closing stages but the promising stopper stood up to the challenge, firstly to deny Mingoia and then Gavin Massey.

Wanderers: Arnold, Hunt, Cox, Saku, Cobb (O'Regan); Ainsworth (Federico), Montrose, Spence, Green (Harris), Bloomfield; Fitchett.

Subs not used: Brennan, Belcher.
