B&B REPORT: BLUES BEAT ROYALISTS

Posted on: Tue 09 Feb 2010

The Wanderers have progressed through to the semi-final stages of the B&B Cup after a 1-0 victory over Windsor and Eton FC.

An 89th minute goal from Matt McClure sealed victory, leaving only Slough Town between the Chairboys and a B&B Cup final place.

Dobson's men started the game 4-4-2, with the youthful paring of Matt Phillips and Kadeem Harris operating on the wings. Experience was provided courtesy of club captain Michael Duberry and - surprisingly - goal keeping coach Martin Brennan.

It was Kadeem's break down the left flank that nearly created the first opening for the Wanderers. However, Stuart Green couldn't quite latch on to the winger's through ball.

Great play from Phillips sent Lewis Montrose bearing down on goal after 15 minutes. A neat one-two in the final third of the pitch ended with Montrose's shot skipping into the keeper's hands.

After a period of sparring in the middle of the park, George Daly found space down the right flank before squaring to Phillips on the edge of the area. Phillips looked to hit the ball early, but saw his effort drift high and wide of goal.

Dan Fitchett came agonisingly close to opening the scoring on 20 minutes when Phillips' cross just eluded him at the back post. Phillips received the ball from Stuart Green on the halfway line before showing the full-back a clean set of heals and delivering a telling cross just ahead of the Blues' striker.

Luke Oliver's aerial presence came into play when the Blues were awarded their first corner of the game. Green's cross was floated towards the back post were it was met by the colossus centre-back. Unfortunately, Oliver couldn't get enough power on his header which was collect comfortably by Windsor's number one.

Martin Brennan's handling was tested after Windsor were awarded a corner in the final five minutes of the first half. The home side's set piece was cleared only as far as their full-back, who sent an awkward shot towards goal. Brennan did well to smother the ball, as the Windsor strikers lurked for any spillages.

Dobson looked to freshen things up for the second half, with Lewis Montrose making way for Sam Belcher in the middle of the park.

Phillips started the second period in typical explosive fashion. The winger was brought down just outside the box after another probing run, before smashing the resultant free-kick straight into the wall.

Early in the second half, veteran defender Michael Duberry delivered an excellent covering tackle inside the Wycombe penalty area, after a great bit of hold up play from the Windsor number nine. The resultant corner was headed over Martin Brennan's bar from close range despite the absence of a Blues challenge.

The most telling chance of the game arrived on 75 minutes when Sam Belcher's stray pass left a Windsor striker with just Luke Oliver to beat. The ball broke - somewhat fortunately - to the home forward as Oliver looked to make his challenge before firing his shot just wide of Brennan's left upright.

Matt McClure missed a golden opportunity to win the game after a dangerous free-kick was headed back across goal by Dan Fitchett. Fitchett's header was met by Luke Oliver inside the Windsor box, who then set up McClure's shot which was directed straight at the keeper.

But McClure's moment was still to come. Excellent work from substitute Jerome Federico was capped by a cross-come-shot from the right hand channel, which McClure deftly headed past the keeper on 89 minutes.
