Wycombe Reserves eased to a 3-1 victory over rivals Colchester United at Oak Tree Road, after an inspirational first half performance blew the U's away.
Dan Fitchett bagged the first of the evening after just nine minutes, spinning on a six-pence to lash home after good work from Jordan Lumsden and Tom O'Regan.
The Blues piled on the pressure and forced United's hand midway through the half, as United centre half Mitchell Nelson headed into his own net from a dangerous Nathan Ashton free-kick.
Fitchett was in scintillating form and could count himself unlucky not to have grabbed a brace, as he saw his spot kick saved by Shane Cusack after drawing a foul in the box from the U's keeper.
The Chairboys did grab their third before the break as Magno Vieira broke the offside trap to slot home and Colchester, under the watchful eye of ex-Wycombe boss Paul Lambert, could only respond with a consolation goal on the hour mark.
Wycombe Wanderers: Reading, O'Regan, Botham, Grayley, Lewis, Ochoa, Lumsden, Spence, Fitchett, Vieira, Ashton
Subs: Ingram, Pearce, Daly, Federico, Wallace
Colchester United: Cusack, Hamilton, Griffiths, Corcoran, Glowacki, O'Sullivan, Malton, Sansford, Stamp, Nelson, Pirie
Subs: McCloskey, Pavett, Dickey, Bender, Lartey
Officials: Mr S Creighton, Mr T Goddard and Mr C O'Donnell
FULL TIME
89 mins: Heroic defending from Jordan Lumsden, he throws his body in the way of a rasping long range shot and sends it away from danger. That had to hurt.
86 mins: Credit to Callum Botham, he's worked very hard tonight and won plenty in the air.
83 mins: Neither substitute has had a chance to make an impact yet, there are a number of long balls being pumped over the top but George Daly has been unable to get on the end of them. Nathan Ashton has switched to left back, with Callum Botham pushing up front.
78 mins: Second half has definitely not lived up to the billing of the first. Wycombe are getting back into things in the last few moments, but haven't created a clear chance.
74 mins: Callum Botham does well to bring the ball down on the wing after good play from Lewwis Spence, but slices his cross high over the bar. Magno Vieira comes off after another creative display and is replaced by David Pearce.
72 mins: Dan Fitchett is the man to make way for George, he's had a good game despite the missed spot kick.
71 mins: George Daly is ready to come on for the Wanderers, could be the injection of pace they need.
69 mins: The Chairboys have been penned back in their own half for some time now, they need an outlet.
65 mins: A lull in the game, United are currently restricted to long range efforts but nothing on target in the last few moments. Wycombe have lost some of their earlier spark.
61 mins: A very young looking bench for the Wanderers tonight. Youth teamers George Daly, Jerome Federico and David Pearce offer attacking options.
57 mins: GOAL. Colchester have one back. A dubious free kick is given on the half way line and Mitchell Nelson sends a looping header over Reading and into the net.
54 mins: Jordan Pavett and Tom Bender are ready to come on for the U's. Wycombe are still dominating proceedings.
51 mins: Not sure how that stayed out, Callum Botham gets to the byline and smashes in a cross to the six yard box, it avaids three on-rushing Blue shirts and clips off a defender for a corner.
48 mins: Looks like the Wanderers are picking up where they left off. Nathan Ashton drives into the heart of the Col U back four and ghosts past two defenders, before slicing his chip high over the keeper. Magno Vieira tries to divert it back towards goal but just loops his volley over the bar.
46 mins: We're back underway here, it looked like Paul Lambert had a few words with the Colchester boys at half time, they might just need a rocket because they were out done in every department by the Chairboys in the first half.
HALF TIME - WANDERERS 3-0 COLCHESTER UNITED
44 mins: GOAL! Magno Vieira bags a third and it's no more than Wycombe deserve. Callum Botham plays the ball long down the left wing and 'Mags' does well to break the offside trap, cut inside and slot home. Great forward play.
42 mins: Heading towards the break here and the Chairboys are good for their lead. Jordan Lumsden breaks through a gap in the midfield but is chopped down, the Wanderers take the set piece quickly and waste it.
38 mins: Harsh on the young lad. Fitchett sees his penalty well saved by Cusack and Spence slices wide from the rebound.
37 mins: Penalty to the Wanderers, Fitchett breaks through to the area, nips the ball ahead of the keeper and is clattered to the ground. He steps up himself...
35 mins: Another effort from the U's but this is way wide, as Cocoran lashes in a volley from distance.
31 mins: A chance for the visitors. A free-kick is allowed to bounce in the box but Bradley Hamilton can only head over from six yards. It was a tough bounce.
28 mins: The Chairboys midfield has been tenacious, with Lumsden, Ochoa and Spence all closing down the Colchester midfield on a regular basis and forcing them into mistakes.
25 mins: GOAL! Comedy stuff. Nathan Ashton whips in another crafty set piece and under no pressure at all Nelson heads into his own goal. 2-0 to the Wanderers.
18 mins: A bit more pressure from Col U in recent minutes but they can't create any real chances, Dan Fitchett is looking bright and wins a free-kick on the half way line with a neat turn.
16 mins: You might recognise that tonight's referee was involved in a strange penalty incident in the recent Peterborough game with Millwall. Less pressure on him tonight.
13 mins: Junior Lewis has had a couple of solid touches so far, not sure David McCracken will be quaking in his boots quite yet though...
11 mins: Sam Grayley should have done better there, the ball fell invitingly to him on the half volley after the U's failed to clear a corner, but the young centre back could only fire into the stand.
9 mins: GOAL! Great goal by the Wanderers. Tom O'Regan finds Jordan Lumsden with a beautifuly flighted ball, the young midfielder hits a daisy cutter into the box where Dan Fitchett turns and in one swift movement, fires the ball home. Superb finish.
7 mins: First half chance for the visitors, centre half Mitchell Nelson heads over from a corner.
5 mins: Dan Fitchett does well to squirm inside and win a corner for the Blues, good delivery by Nathan Ashton but plucked out the sky by the keeper.
3 mins: That was close, superb play from Lewwis Spence. He jinks in from the left hand side of the box before unleashing a trademark stinging effort, just tipped away by Cusack.
1 mins: We're underway here, unusual occasion in many respects. The reserve team manager at centre half and the ex-manager watching from the stands. Make of that what you will...
