Wanderers' reserve side created a number of good chances but weren't clinical enough in front of goal, as they lost 2-1 to Watford's second string at Boreham Wood FC last night.

Wycombe's only goal came courtesy of a late Nathan Ashton strike, but by this point the Blues were already two goals down, with their Hertfordshire opponents taking the opportunities that came their way.

Watford took the lead midway through the first half with a goal from midfielder Al Bangura, and the hosts doubled their advantage in the last ten minutes through substitute Piero Mingoia.

Junior Lewis' side started brightly and Ashton had a great chance to give his team an early lead.

Striker George Daly's initial shot was blocked by 'Orns defender Lee Hodson and the ball fell to Ashton, but the midfielder's effort could only find the woodwork, and Watford survived the danger.

Blues youngster Jordan Lumsden also sent a strike wide of Jonathan North's post, before the hosts made Wycombe pay for failing to convert their pressure.

Academy player Louis Lavers crossed from the left, picking out Bangura in the penalty area, who duly smashed the ball past keeper James Reading.

The 18-year-old did produce good saves to deny Lewis Young and Marvin Sordell, keeping his side in the game before the break.

The majority of the second half was quieter, with Matt Richards spurning another good opportunity for the Blues, as he blasted over the bar.

Watford effectively put the game to bed late on, with Mingoia coming off the bench to fire a brilliant strike into the corner of Reading's net from outside the area.

Wanderers did fight back and within a minute Ashton had reduced the deposit, shooting low past North after an intricate one-two in the box, which ensured a nervy finish for the home side.

However it was too little too late for Wycombe, as they fell to their second straight defeat and with it drop to third in the Totesport Football Combination East Division, a point behind both Watford and Southend.
