The 26 year old had impressed the manager with a series of fine displays towards the end of last season and indeed it was he who belted the winner against the Blues in February, a goal that put a serious dent in Wanderers Play Off hopes. Oakes has seen his career take a nosedive after bursting onto the Premiership scene with Leicester City. Brother of former LutonTown hero Scott, he was loaned out to Crewe Alexandra and eventually signed for Walsall on a free transfer in July 2003.
