The Blues crashed out the Carling Cup on Tuesday evening thanks to a classy display from Darren Ferguson's Peterborough United.

A Jamie Young own goal combined with a close range Tommy Rowe strike to put the game beyond doubt before the break, before a spectacular George Boyd effort added to a smart Lee Frecklington finish to send the Chairboys crashing out at the first hurdle.

Peter Taylor made six changes to the side that came so close to surprising Charlton Atheltic on Saturday afternoon, with Jamie Young, Stuart Beavon, JP Pittman, Luke Oliver, Matt Bloomfield and Leon Johnson earning chances to impress.

The Chairboys started brightly with a slick passing move after fifteen minutes, as Beavon and Pittman combined before Green dragged a shot just wide of Joe Lewis' post.

It proved to be a false dawn as the Posh opened the scoring ten minutes later, with Aaron McLean firing an awkward shot across goal, which Jamie Young could only palm into the corner of the net.

The lead was doubled moments later as controversial ex-Wanderer Tom Williams was allowed far too much space to swing in a dangerous cross, allowing Tommy Rowe to nip ahead of Young to poke home.

Peter Taylor's side did rally briefly before the break as Stuart Green saw an effort cleared off the line, but it was to be an uphill struggle against an impressive Championship outfit.

Chris Zebroski tested internationally renowned keeper Lewis just after half time but it was only a pre-fix to the game's most spectacular strike, as George Boyd curled home a scintillating 25-yard effort to further silence the home support.

Lee Frecklington stabbed home a fourth within minutes after Aaron McLean clipped in a neat through ball, sending the Wanderers to a 4-0 defeat in the League Cup for the second year running.

JP Pittman almost bagged a consolation effort in the dying stages after volleying in a pinpoint Matt Phillips cross, but as the ball whistled past the post the Blues were left to set their sights on League One football ahead of the visit of Leeds United this Saturday.
