Wanderers were forced to settle for a point on Tuesday evening as Barnet battled back for a 1-1 draw at Adams Park after John Akinde had opened the scoring.

The on-loan Bristol City man fired home from 18 yards to set the Blues on their way but a moment of indecision in defence proved costly as Paul Furlong stole in to score past Jamie Young, and the visiting defence held firm to prevent Peter Taylor's men from collecting an important win.

Taylor made three changes to the side which drew 1-1 Shrewsbury at the weekend, with Luke Oliver, Chris Zebroski and Jon-Paul Pittman replacing Will Antwi, Lee Sawyer and Matt Harrold in the starting line-up, while the visitors named the experienced Paul Furlong alongside 16-goal man John O'Flynn up-front.

It was the Irishman who brought about the first chance of the game, turning inside the box before drawing a save from Jamie Young with a low effort, and it soon became clear that the visitors hadn't simply turned up to play for a draw.

On nine minutes, the same pair were called into action again when Young's hurried clearance rebounded into the path of the Barnet marksman, but O'Flynn couldn't connect properly with the shot and the home defence managed to clear.

The deadlock was broken on nineteen minutes and it came from Wycombe's first real attack of the game, with John Akinde showing a touch of class to fire home from 18 yards after receiving a superb through-ball from Matt Bloomfield. The striker held off the challenge of the defender and unleashed an effort across keeper Jake Cole into the back of the net, sparking celebrations from the fans in the Valley Terrace behind the goal.

Even though Barnet enjoyed decent spells of possession, the Blues defence seemed to be doing enough to keep them at bay. However, Jamie Young made a good block from close range following a corner and moments later, he brought down winger Albert Adomah outside the box following a moment of hesitation between himself and Luke Oliver.

The Aussie keeper wasn't the last man and was rightly shown just a yellow card, and the resulting free-kick came to nothing.

However, the equaliser came on 42 minutes and the Wycombe defence will be disappointed with the way that Paul Furlong was allowed to steam through the centre of the pitch to convert a through-ball. A moment of indecision between the centre-back pairing of Frank Sinclair and Luke Oliver was pounced upon by the former Chelsea striker and he dispatched the ball past Jamie Young from twelve yards with just three minutes of the half remaining.

With no changes for either side at the interval, Wycombe came out of the blocks quickest and made a strong start to the second half, with plenty of energy and vigour in the attack, and that was boosted by the arrival of Lee Sawyer on 55 minutes, who injected trickery and a direct approach to the home side.

Within moments of his arrival, the midfielder had released Gary Holt with an exquisite flick, and the Scottish midfielder carried the ball towards the penalty area before curling a superb effort towards the top corner, in a style almost identical to the manner in which he scored against Shrewsbury on Saturday. However, this time the goalkeeper was equal to it and pulled off a fine save to tip the ball around the post.

Two minutes later, Jamie Young raced from his goal to close down John O'Flynn, but the Irishman took the ball past the keeper and pulled it back into the danger zone. Fortunately, there were enough defenders back to cover, but in the same attack, Adomah burst into the box and went down far too easily near Craig Woodman, with referee Steve Bratt waving away the appeals.

Chris Zebroski was booked on 70 minutes for a foul and moments later, Matt Harrold took to the field to replace JP Pittman, while Matt Phillips came on for John Akinde eight minutes later as Peter Taylor looked for his subs to find the winning goal.

It almost came on 80 minutes from the unlikeliest of sources, with Bees centre-back Gary Breen volleying a yard wide of his own post, and with time running out, Matt Harrold produced a stunning effort from 20 yards which was fisted downwards by Jake Cole.

The ball rebounded towards Gary Holt but, perhaps still suffering the effects of an early head injury, opted to attack the ball with his feet rather than his head and the ball skewed wide.

Four minutes of stoppage time came and went with no goalscoring chances and the final whistle signalled a point for both sides, which takes the Blues into fourth place and level on points with the third automatic promotion place.
