Wanderers have leap-frogged Chesterfield in the table following their 1-0 win at Adams Park.

Paul Lambert's side dominated proceedings from start to finish in the close encounter and a wonderful strike from top scorer Scott McGleish was enough to claim all three points and move the Blues up to 5th in the League 2 table.

The goal came in the 26th minute when after having the ball knocked down to him by the brilliant Matt Bloomfield; McGleish fired his side into the lead with a thunderous 25-yard volley.

Chesterfield came to Adams Park on the back of a 4-0 win against Hereford earlier in the week, but the Blues defended well against the likes of Jamie Ward and joint top scorer in League 2 - Jack Lester.

Bloomfield takes on Chesterfield

After the visitors showed some early promise Wanderers soon took control of the game following McGleish's 17th league goal of the season. The home side were unlucky not to go in 2-0 up at the break but a combination of great goalkeeping and rushed finishing meant the Blues had to settle for a 1-0 lead at the interval.

Leon Knight was introduced late into the 2nd half after John Sutton clashed heads with Janos Kovacs and showed signs of brilliance throughout.

The Blues started the 2nd half just as they finished the 1st. They pushed their opponents back and Gary Holt and Tommy Doherty started to dominate the midfield allowing the likes of Sergio Torres and Matt Bloomfield to run at Chesterfield.

Chesterfield showed glimpses of why they are 6th in the table and looked to utilise the pace of Jamie Ward over the top of the Blues defence.

But as the final twenty minutes started to approach there is always that feeling that there could be a sting in the tail. But not in this game, the defence was excellent. Not only defending the likes of Russell Martin was great going forward. He offered a real outlet down the right-hand side and could have got his first goal of the season but his shot was parried by Barry Roche in the Chesterfield goal.

After the midfield duo of Gary Holt and Tommy Doherty had taken a stranglehold of the game the attacking minded players were able to take the game to Chesterfield, playing some lovely football in the process.

Chesterfield started to build up some momentum in the last ten minutes of the game but whatever the visitors threw at the Wanderers' defence they were up to the challenge.

The result has got the home form back on track following the 1-0 defeat against Rochdale earlier in the month and Paul Lambert's men will look to follow this win with another three points against Dagenham & Redbridge at Adams Park on Tuesday night.
