Wycombe put in classy display to take all three points from Blundell Park on Tuesday night, with Sergio Torres scoring the only goal of the game to give a massive boost to the Blues' playoff hopes.

The Argentine midfielder combined well with the impressive Delroy Facey on nineteen minutes, before lashing a rasping drive past  Phil Barnes in the Grimsby goal.

In truth the Chairboys will have felt that could have had more, as they squandered a series of chances in the second half in a dominating performance.

Paul Lambert made just one change from the 2-2 draw with MK Dons on Saturday, with Delroy Facey replacing Leon Knight alongside Scott McGleish.

The first chance of the game fell to a Grimsby striker though, as four minutes in Martin Butler found space on the right hand side of the area.

He had to settle for a corner though as a wonderful low save from Frank Fielding denied the experienced frontman.

That early opportunity wasn't a sign of things to come, as the Wanderers took over the game - playing some marvelous football in the process.

Delroy Facey was proving impossible to handle for the Mariners back four, who spent most of the night bouncing off the targetman as he showed some masterful hold up play.

Five minutes in it was his pace on show however, as he raced to the edge of the area before sending a low shot just wide of the upright.

It wasn't long before the on-loan Gillingham man had another chance to give the Blues the lead, getting on the end of a dangerous Russell Martin free kick.

He did well to keep the ball down with his header but was denied by another solid save from Barnes.

If the traveling Chairboys fans were starting to worry they needn't have, as the Wanderers took the lead through Sergio Torres.

He collected the ball twenty five yards from goal, before exchanging passes with Delroy Facey on the edge of area.

The man from Mar-Del-Plata still had plenty of work to do from just inside the box, but calmly sent a crashing drive into the bottom corner of the net.

From then on Grimsby were always on the back foot, as the Chairboys went for the kill before half time.

Russell Martin was putting in a outstanding display at full back, showing off his impressive passing ability with a 40 yard cross field ball finding a goal-bound Tommy Doherty with ten minutes remaining - though the Northern Irish international saw his effort blocked again by the busy Barnes.

Delroy Facey again found himself with an opportunity moment before the break, when he was released after a wonderful run and pass from Torres.

The towering striker was denied only by some superb last ditch defending.

The second half saw Town enjoy plenty of possession, all be it whilst never looking like cutting open a rock solid Blues back four.

The aerial dominance of Williamson and Johnson was plain for all to see, as Alan Buckley's side began to run out of ideas - much to the frustration of the Blundell Park faithful.

On the hour mark Wycombe suddenly found themselves back in the game, with a spell that could have seen them go five goals up.

Stefan Oakes was involved in three of the opportunities, as he first sent a trademark crossfield pass straight onto the head of Facey.

Delroy's flick on was perfectly weighted to find Scott McGleish, who saw his effort saved well by the legs of Barnes.

Hero almost turned to villain moments later, as the Town keeper awkwardly sliced his clearance to Oakes on the halfway line, who sent back an ambitious 45 yard effort that was denied only by the post.

The Mariners' back four had no time to pause for breath though, as Oakes again broke through on the left hand side of the area.

The ex-Leicester man lashed his shot wide of the post when shooting was surely the better option, with McGleish and Facey both rushing on in the centre of the area.

An extraordinary period of football was complete when the ball fell to Scott McGleish after a goalmouth scramble, but Wycombe's top scorer somehow only dragged the ball wide from all of six yards out.

The traveling support could have been forgiven for thinking that missing such chances could cost Paul Lambert's side, but in truth the home side never looked like coming back into the game.

Match winner Sergio Torres was replaced by Dave McCracken as the Chairboys looked to sure up the side, and there was to be no repeat of the heartbreak of Stadium:mk at the weekend - as three minutes of injury time were seen out by some composed 'keep ball' from the men in the blue quarters.

The victory gives Wycombe a five point gap ahead of Chesterfield inside the playoffs and with the Spireites set to take on sixth placed Darlington this weekend - a place in the top seven looks extremely secure for the Wanderers.

Relegation threatened Chester City lie in wait at Adams Park on Saturday, as the Chairboys look to put their playoff place beyond doubt.

Manager Paul Lambert was full of praise for his side after the game, telling wwfc.com that the confidence in the camp is plain for all to see.

"We were brilliant tonight after the disappointment of Saturday the lads were unbelievable," he said.

"It was a totally different game to the ones against MK Dons and Peterborough, it was a long trip up but we're delighted to go home with three points.

We played extremely well this season, everyone is really vibrant in the changing room and we've given ourselves a great chance of promotion now."
