Chances didn't produce goals at Adams Park |
A goalless draw was played out with Notts County in a tale of two keepers at Adams Park.
Despite opportunities coming at either end, it was 'stoppers Jamie Young and Kevin Pilkington that stole the show with a succession of saves that kept their side in the game and ensured a five point gap remains between the two teams in League Two.
It was the third meeting with the Magpies this season and with a loss, win and draw on the board honours are most definitely even.
Paul Lambert told wwfc.com: "We should've had a few goals in the first half but it never materialised. The 'keeper made a great save from Jermaine and had that gone in it might have been different.
"But I can't ask any more of the lads. The way they played the game was good and at the end of it we're still up there in the table."
The game took half an hour to gather some pace and when it did Wanderers should have been in front.
Tommy Mooney, who had already had a handball appeal turned down in the area and a header drift past the post from Stefan Oakes' free kick, rolled back the years to outpace Mike Edwardsbefore laying the ball into the path of Jermaine Easter.
Having already netted 21 goals this season you'd have banked on him adding to that tally, but Pilkington pulled of the first of three marvellous saves to keep the scores level.

He was at it again moments later when a slick passing move involving Oakes, Russell Martin and Mooney set Matt Bloomfield on his way. Just at like Wrexham last week however, Bloomfield took a touch too many before relasing his effort and Pilkington rushed out to smother.
Then he leapt across his goal to deny Scott Golbourne from range as tables gradually turned in County's favour.
Unfortunately for them striker and captain Jason Lee was on the end of two glorious opportunities that came their way. When Lawrie Dudfield dispossessed the undecided Mike Williamson on the byline, his cut back was weakly struck at goal for Young to gather. Dudfield then made moves down the opposite flank to feed Andy Parkinson and his delicate cross was headed wide by the big frontman, despite being unmarked in the area.

Palms: chance |
On 58 minutes, Dudfield did to Martin exactly what he'd done to Williamson earlier in the game and after Parkinson had fed on the scraps to loft the ball into the box, transfer target David Pipe was prevented a goal thanks to a superb save from Young.
Dudfield would get his own chance to test the 'keeper with a snapshot midway through the half but, as he has done every time he's been called upon in the absence of Ricardo Batista, Young leapt early to his right to keep the ball out.
Wanderers rallied but only had a speculative effort from Chris Palmer to reflect upon in the second half. The same player hit the side netting late on with a cross-come-shot that almost caught Pilkington out.
