Anthony Grant performed well at right midfield |
Wycombe ended a seven year curse at the Racecourse Ground with a crucial victory over struggling Wrexham.
There was only ever going to be one winner in this game. Both teams desperately needed the points but only one team looked like getting them and thanks to goals from Mike Williamson and Jermaine Easter, that was the Blues.
Paul Lambert said: "It's a tough place to come to against a team that is fighting really hard but the lads were great. We went solid across the middle and the system worked well with Anthony Grant playing on the right hand side of midfield."
With Wanderers 2-0 up and coasting however the game did take a turn for the worse when a moment of madness saw Ricardo Batista boot the ball into the Wrexham crowd.
His actions came after Wrexham's Chris Llewellyn was booked for a two footed lunge on Stefan Oakes 20 minutes into the second half. The challenge sparked a melee between both sets of players, one that was eventually ironed out by referee Clive Owen and Blues captain Tommy Mooney, who gathered his team in a huddle to defuse the situation.
Batista was duly sent off by Mr Owen and is set for a three match ban which will give Jamie Young yet another chance to prove his worth in between the sticks. What the incident did do was give a Wrexham side hope which had been non-existent before that.

Willo: goal |
Anthony Grant was used in an unaccustomed right midfield and the Chelsea loanee also did his bit to put the Blues in the ascendancy. Although not as elegant as Kevin Betsy in that area, Grant can guarantee endless effort. Twice he fed Jermaine Easter in the first half with chances which the striker failed to convert. He also found himself in the opposing area but couldn't claim his first goal for the club when Easter shrugged off Shaun Pejic to return the favour.
Shortly after the interval, the combination did work. In a move that came straight off the Training Ground this week, Grant's right wing cross was touched on by Mooney and Easter hammered in unmarked.
That clearly put minds at ease and Wanderers began to produce the type of football that has been missing in recent fixtures. One fine move saw Bloomfield dummy a return ball from Easter into the path of Scott Golbourne but although his shot beat Mike Ingham, it didn't beat the post.

Then came the incident involving Batitsa which, for a moment, riled the home crowd who had previously berated their side and sarcastically applauded everytime 'keeper Ingham had caught an easy ball.
It also geed up some of the Wrexham players and substitutes Lee McEvilly and Jamie Reed both tested replacement stopper Jamie Young.
Luckily, the Blues regrouped and claimed a much needed three points that could restart their promotion hunt in League Two. For Wrexham it's another defeat in Brian Carey's winless tenure that, on this performance, shows no signs of improving.
