Wanderers maintained their place in the play offs with another home draw against Shrewsbury at Adams Park, but Town remain just a point behind the Blues with a game in hand after Michael Symes swift first half reply cancelled out Tommy Mooney's opener.

The Easter holiday fixtures are so often important , none more so than for Wycombe this year. Paul Lambert was able to welcome back Jermaine Easter and Ricardo Batista after suspensions and international duties and both went straight into the starting XI.

The Blues were however without the services of influential midfielder Tommy Doherty, suspended after recieving his 10th booking of the season at Peterborough last Saturday, but Anthony Grant made light of his absence with an authoritative display of his own.

Chris Palmer tested the handling of Scott Shearer early on from long range after a neat turn away from Stewart Drummond, but that aside, neither side created any clear cut chances in a tense opening. Easter skipped past Richard Hope only to see Neil Ashton rescue Town with an excellent block tackle, whilst at the other end Derek Asamoah wasted a good opportunity by hitting his shot into the ground after Ben Davies clever ball saw him steal in behind Scott Golbourne.

A tense affair needed a goal, and thanks to a woeful back pass from the otherwise excellent Drummond, it got one. The midfielder failed to spot Mooney lurking as he layed the ball back allowing Mooney to pounce and calmly slide the ball under Shearer into the net.

It was just the lift Wcyombe required, but it wouldn't last long. Only six minutes later the Blues struggled to clear Ashton's long throw from the right. The ball broke to Davies whose cross-come shot was diverted past Batista by Symes with Wanderers looking for an offside flag that never came.

Between the goals, Asamoah had clumisly bundled Sam Stockley to the ground and both were booked after Stockley reacted angrily to the challenge.

The home crowd were becoming increasing frustrated with the performance of the officials and it was from a harshly awarded free kick against Grant that Symes glanced a header wide.

HT: 1-1

Wanderers enjoyed their best spell of the game after the break with Shrewsbury firmly on the back foot. Indeed, they nearly had the lead within a minute of the restart as Mooney somehow lifted the ball onto the bar and over from only 5 yards out. It was to be their best chance.

Palmer was seeing plenty of the ball on the left flank and his jinxing run tied up Stefan Oakes for a shot which was well blocked by Drummond, before Lewis Christon headed wide from the resulting corner on his home debut.

Despite Wanderers pressure, the visitors still looked dangerous on the break and Asamoah fired a warning shot despite being off target on the turn.

Increasingly Shrewsbury began to look stronger and despite the introductions of Sergio Torres and Scott McGleish, Wanderers scoring opportunities began to dwindle.

At the other end, Davies long range shot had to be beaten away by Batista, before the same man delivered a corner which bounced dangerously in the 6 yard box before being cleared.

But Wanderers big let off came 9 minutes from time when Dave Edwards header was disallowed for an offside against Asamoah.

"We did well enough to win the game" Paul Lambert said afterwards. "We came out really quick at the start of the second half and really got after them and made chances."

"We're still well in it and we'll go and try to get a win at Grimsby on Monday."
