Dennis Lawrence heads Wrexham into the lead |
A great performance from Wrexham saw Wanderers lose 2-0 at the Racecourse in a game the home side fully deserved to win.
First half goals from Dennis Lawrence and Sam Williams were enough to see the Red Dragons home as the Blues failed to register a shot on Mike Ingham's goal.
The expected tactical change from John Gorman at half time introduced Dean Bowditch and Aidan Collins into the action - as the visitors left just three at the back and tucked the on loan Ipswich man just behind Tommy Mooney and full debutant Jermaine Easter - but the early gamble failed to pay off with the tight Wrexham defense and organised midfield frustratingly limiting any time Wanderers found on the ball.
Jim Whitley in particular pulled the strings in the middle of the park alongside substitute Levi Mackin who admirably filled the void left by effective youngster Mark Jones who was forced off inside the first five minutes.
At the back Trinidad & Tobago International, who will be coming up against Engand's strikers at this years World Cup in Germany, didn't lose an aerial challenge in the game and rose unmarked in the area to put the home side into the lead.
After Juan Ugarte had put the first chance of the game over the bar on three minutes, the deadlock was broken when Lawrwnce converted Mark Cowell's outs-winging corner.
It was a deserved lead for Wrexham who began the better of the two teams and nearly extended their lead when Lawrence won another header only to see Joe Burnell block the shot from Andy Holt.

A minute later however they did get that second goal and it came after a beautifully flowing move that has normally been associated with the Blues this season.
Juan Ugarte, who made an explosive return at the Racecourse by scoring against TNS in the week, held the ball up brilliantly in the final third and once he fed Shaun Pejic on the overlap, his pinpoint cross was nodded home by Sam Williams who had crept in between Russell Martin and Roger Johnson.
Wanderers responded by upping the tempo and Mooney had two half chances to get Wycombe back in the game. The first he dug out by himself and couldn't get quite enough power on the ball and the second came following a nice interchange between Easter and Kevin Betsy.

However, neither made Ingham work in the Wrexham goal and just after the half hour mark Ugarte forced Matt Duke into save from Mike Williamson's sloppy clearance.
Clint Easton then cleared an effort off the line under pressure from Mackin after Holt had drilled in a low cross and Simon Spender should have made it three but blasted his effort into the crowd from 15 yards.
The Blues came out of the blocks with a bit more zest in the second half and seconds after they restart Betsy's cross found Mooney in space but once the ball had unkindly bounced up towards him, his first touch couldn't set him up for a shot on goal.

Duke was in action again to make routine stops from Spender and Crowell but it meant that the home side were sustaining pressure and when Wanderers did get the ball back, the determination of the Dragons, on most occasions, won it back.
Gorman threw Ian Stonebridge on near the end in a last ditch effort to salvage from the game but any inroads the Blues did make into the opposition half were met by the rock like presence of Lawrence.
With time running out it was Wrexham who looked favourites to get the next goal and had Whitley nearly capped off a fine performance with a run and shot that was palmed away once more by the busy Duke.
John Gorman said. "Wrexham played exceptionally well. The did to us what we have done to everyone else this season and they put us under pressure.
"It was our worst performance of the season but don't rule us out. It was a bad day for us and we will bounce back."
Attendance: 4311 of which 269 were Wycombe fans.
