Kevin Betsy battles through |
Wanderers put on a show for the live Sky Sports cameras to bounce back to the top of League Two after a stunning performance against fellow promotion candidates Leyton Orient.
Questions had been raised in recent weeks over the Blues' current form following a record of just one point from a possible six in the previous two fixtures.
Tonight, those questions were answered in the best way possible as goals from Charlie Griffin, Matt Bloomfield and Stefan Oakes ensured victory on a crisp night at the Causeway Stadium.
Orient did have the scores level at 1-1 midway through the first half through Lee Steele but it only lasted a minute as Gabriel Zakuani headed into his own net when unchallenged to add to a four goal haul from John Gorman's men.
A minor comeback was threatened when Shane Tudor stabbed home to make it 4-2 but with Wanderers playing some of the most effective football seen this season, the game was never in doubt.
The inclusion of Stefan Oakes and Joe Burnell was inspirational in the victory as the two took control of the midfield in the first hour of the game before being substituted with two games in less than a week still ahead.
Despite being sidelined since November 11th with a broken arm, Oakes returned as though he'd never been away. A fleeting cameo which contributed to the fight back against Torquay United on Boxing Day did no harm to his preparation for the full return and his thunderbolt on 54 minutes capped off a dazzling display.
After coming short to receive the ball from Russell Martin, in for Danny Senda and brimming with confidence after two mature back to back performances for the side, the 27 year unleashed an unstoppable left foot rasper that fans have been eagerly awaiting since his arrival from Notts County in the summer.
In previous fixtures he's not been so fortunate but this effort had highly acclaimed keeper Glyn Garner beaten all ends up as the ball swerved into the onion bag from no less than 30 yards out.

That pretty much ended the game as a contest after an exciting opening 60 minutes that wouldn't have done the Football League's reputation any harm with those watching from the comfort of their own homes.
Not even two minutes had passed before Griffin lashed Wanderers into the lead. Bloomfield fed Kevin Betsy in on the right hand side and after his effort had been blocked the striker, who's now bagged seven goals in nine starts for the club, drove past Garner with a tidy left foot finish.
Referee Dermot Gallagher correctly ruled that Garner didn't illegally bring down Bloomfield when the youngster was delightfully chipped in by Burnell who four minutes later just missed the target after a short and sharp interchange between Betsy and Griffin had presented him with the chance.
Wycombe were playing football of the highest order but in their first real attack of the game the visitors struck back after persistence from lively winger Shane Tudor kept a move going which had begun from Garner's drop kick.
The former Cambridge United man, who despite the result was a constant thorn on the Wanderers side, rode two challenges and after a one two with eventual scorer Steele forced Talia to parry his low shot which left an open goal for the O's number 10.
It didn't last long though as Zakuani was left red faced when he looped a header over his own keeper to restore Wanderers' lead. There didn't appear to be any danger from Burnell's routine cross but with Tommy Mooney present in the area there's always cause for panic and the Orient defender did just that.
As snow began to fall on the Causeway Stadium John Mackie was fortunate not be punished for climbing all over Griffin in the area and Clint Easton came close to grabbing his fourth of the campaign with a deflected free kick that made Garner's expert stop all the more impressive.

With Steele forced off with a hamstring injury just before the break the spice in the visitors' attack had a slight kick taken out of it and things went from bad to worse after the teams re-emerged from the tunnel as Bloomfield made it three five minutes later.
Man in the middle Gallagher played his part in allowing an excellent advantage when Betsy was tugged back on the half way line. It paid dividends as Mooney cut back to the edge of the area and although the ball wasn't meant for Bloomfield he made it his own with a fantastic strike that required technique and precision which he had in abundance.
Oakes extended the advantage shortly after Roger Johnson had remained alive to clear Joe Keith's goalbound volley and despite Tudor's goal with 20 minutes left on the clock, it ended up being scant consolation for third place Orient.
Changes were made with Rob Lee and Sergio Torres on for Oakes and Burnell and Torres could have completely killed the game before the O's second when he shot just wide following a succession of passes involving himself, Betsy and Griffin.

Former Wanderers midfield dynamo Michael Simpson failed to have the impact on the game that he would have liked and his night was summed up with ten minutes to go courtesy of a late challenge on Torres that put his name in the referee's notebook.
From there on in, Wanderers footballed the game to it's finale and prompted the 'Safe Standing' crowd to cheer their every pass. There was even a verse or two of 'Chairboys: barmy army' started by a small section of the BCUC Stand late on which went some way to portraying how the Gorman style of football is appealing to the fans.
He said. "It showed people that if you come and watch Wycombe you'll see goals and we've been producing that all season and what's good about the result is that we had pressure on us tonight after Grimsby went top yesterday.
"It's a big win because that's Orient's first defeat away from home. Charlie scored again and Tommy deserved a goal because he was awesome. There were a lot of good performances all over the pitch.
"Russell Martin came in for Danny Senda and did really well and what a wonderful goal from Bloomfield - it was a great move and a great goal. That's the great thing about us - we haven't stopped scoring goals and we'll always create chances."
