GARY: WE'RE BETTER THAN THAT

Posted on: Mon 23 Aug 2010

Blues boss Gary Waddock felt his side underperformed in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Oxford United and says they didn't reach the standards he expects of them.

Despite producing the better of the chances in the opening 45 minutes, Wanderers were ultimately indebted to keeper Nikki Bull for ensuring a point and a third successive clean sheet as the visitors took control of proceedings after the break:

"We're miles better than what we showed today," he said. "Credit to Oxford - they played very well in the second half and put us under a lot of pressure - but we need to cope better with situations like that.

"I'm not very happy. I don't like singling players out but if it wasn't for Nikki Bull, we wouldn't have got anything. We weren't good enough.

"It's not all about free-flowing attacking football; in this division you've got to work hard and grind out results and get the better of your opposite number. We haven't done that.

"We need to be stronger, mentally and physically, because teams aren't going to come here to lay down and die. We've got to fight.

"But for an attacking side, we've got three clean sheets in a very difficult league and come up against a very good Oxford side who have made it difficult for us. However, I know we're better than that."
