New Chairboys signing Ben Strevens says he's glad it's Gary Waddock and not himself picking the team on Saturday, as Wycombe's in-form strikers battle for a starting place in their League Two curtain raiser against Morecambe (k.o. 3pm).

Strevens has bagged three goals in a successful pre-season campaign for the Blues, but admits his place in the starting line-up is not guaranteed.

He said: "The other night (in the 5-1 win against a Chelsea XI) I thought me and Scotty (Rendell) did well, coming off with a goal each, then JP (Pittman) comes on and gets a hat-trick in four minutes, so there's competition all over the pitch.

"Whoever gets left out, there's going to be disappointments, but it's a long old season. Hopefully I'll be in, but we've all done well."

Wanderers' new-look side have notched an impressive 28 goals in pre-season and Ben believes the players can take that momentum into Saturday's opening game against Morecambe.

"Pre-season's gone well, but we've got to make sure we turn that into league points now," he said. "We're trying to play the game in the right way, we're working hard in training and I think we're taking it onto the pitch.

"I think we're going to be a match for anyone in this league."

"We've got to start the season on fire. Hopefully we'll get three points against Morecombe and take things from there. I think we've got all the markings of a good side, but we've got to show it now in the league."

Former Dagenham man Strevens warns that Morecombe - who narrowly missed out on promotion last season - will be no pushovers at Adams Park.

"They're a big side. I've played against them plenty of times and they're a tough team. It's a good test for us, but I feel that if we play like we have been and move the ball as we have, I think we're going to be a match for anyone in this league.

"It's time for us to prove it now. We've done all the hard work, we're all fit, we're all looking strong and sharp and scoring goals, so let's take that into the season and get this club back into League One."
